Re:How many Qts of Oil for 05 1700 fighting SVS 5 Months, 3 Weeks ago
I have an 05 myself and went through the SVS problem 3 times before I finally fixed it.
I first used the seafoam. I did the shock treatment, got on the interstate and ran the crap out of it for the full tank of gas, changed the oil and oil filter after that.
When I added new oil I put in 3 1/2 quarts.
Next I changed the way I warm the bike up and the way I ride it (a little).
First when I first start it I pull the enricher knob out two clicks and start it. I let it idle for about 1 minute then put the knob in to 1 click out. Again I let it idle for around a minute or until I can crack the throttle. Then I push the knob all the way in and go.
I keep the RPM's up in 1st and 2nd gear and in fact try to keep the RPM's up till I hit cruising speed.
You can see my carb setup in my profile.
Also I would recommend doing the choke cable mod that Musky put up in the tech articles. I discovered after doing the mod that my enricher was always on just a little and I'm sure that didn't help with the SVS problem. Got around 4,000 miles since I did the fix with no problems.

I've believed when you change your oil 4 qts and no more. I did that on my last change and found my level way too high I checked it several different times (the ride, idle, check way) and it was always too high and it was blowing out the crankcase breather I had put on so I took about 1/3 qt out no problem.
The manual says to put in 2 qts and start engine for 30 sec. then add oil until midway between the hash marks on the dipstick up to but not exceeding 4.3qts.
Dunno how that fits into the way they say we have to check the oil level by riding it

Yamaha seems to think my 06 takes 3.5qts. This is the amount they put in my bike with close supervision of the corprate rep. Unfortunatly I believe this caused my bike to run hot and ruined my rings. I still have not seen anything official from Yamaha motor corp on the amount but this is what the tech disclosed in the last round of depositions, and this is what the local custom builder drained out and measured. Like the tootsie pop comercial say's....The world may never know.

I put in 4 qts the last time I changed it.. I was just wondering if I should drop it another half.... It just seems on an air cooled engine the oil is the life blood...I'm starting to think YAMAHA should be made to eat all these R*'s with SVS problems...I think maybe when i change the oil I'll drop to 3.75 qts and hope for a happy medium.I also am gonna hammer her a little harder through the gears and will probably just forget I have a 5th gear except on the interstate.

I never see 5th gear any more unless I'm on haulin on an interstate.
I'm usually riding around the Adirondacks's in New York or going east into Mass., Vermont, and New Hampshire so heat isn't normally a problem for me.

I am probably going to add 3 3/4 or 4 quarts when I do my oil change before I ride down to Florida in the middle of August. I know it will be a lot hotter there and it will be interstate's all the way to Bell, Fl.

I also have an '05 recovering from SVS. I started putting in 4 qts with a dash of MMO in the gas occasionally, no more problems. Oh yeah, I also dog her out once in a while to clear her sinuses.
