Needle adjustment 5 Years, 7 Months ago
Well, I should have looked at it before I took it apart, but when I took the needle out pices fell out everywhere. What I ended up with was; 1 needle, washer and spacer on the needle, 1 washer off and one plastic something. I put the needle on the third clip, (was on the second, too lean) spacer, washer, spring, washer, and back in and put the plastic something on top and pushed it in to hold it in place. Is this correct. I think I may need another washer, still seems a little lean.
I am running;
Vance & Hines L/S
Hyper Charger
AIS removed
180/40
PMS on 2.75
Where? In the south/(Tennessee)getting cold had to adjust. The plastic something has a name, but I have no idea, it just looked like that was the right place for it. Don't laugh , let me know. Of course I put this under the wrong heading
I thing the spring goes between the needle and the plastic tab , that would mean, I need to be on the 4 clip, because the spring took up the extra space. I am really screwed up on this. Thanks for the help, Paul

Post edited by: pharri, at: 2006/10/02 07:27

We're all screwed up ... some more that others.

From the blunt end, which is the top when the needle sits in the carb, you should have a washer, clip, white plastic spacer, and one washer. That's the standard setup. The assembled needle goes into the holder, then the spring and the plastic retainer keeps the needle in the holder.

BTW ... when taking out the plastic retainer make sure to pull straight up or you'll break one of the tabs

I have a pic of the assembly at home (fat lot of good that does you) but maybe someone can post a pic in the meantime.

I know I really screwed this up, but I promise you before I put the spring and washer where they belong, the bike ran great. When I put them back in the correct order, I have the same problem. The needle was on the second clip which was too lean. When the engine was cold, 15 seconds on choke, take off on the second notch of choke, and when I hit 4th and 5th gear, the bike would stuuter and back fire. Since I put the clip on the 3rd and adjusted the PMS it still, (not as bad) stutters in 4th and 5th till the bike has had a chance to warm up. This has been an issue, on and off for a while, but here lately his happens every time. I know the weather has some to do with it. I have not changed a thing since last year, that is when it happened on and off. I tried the 4th clip, but it was way too rich. I will try a spacer and 2 washers on the third, with the spring and the other washer where they belong and see what happens. I am not an idiot, but I sure feel like one now, (don't agree )If you can't laugh at yourself at times, why live. Thanks, Paul

Have you checked the float needle and seat to see if they're working right? I wonder if you aren't semi running out of gas by the time you get up to 4th and 5th. Just a thought.

I have the diagram of the needle placement and all are back in order. I will try another washer. This morning it was not near as bad as it has been. The float appears to be correct. This was my first time at digging into the carb, next time I will know a little more than going at it half cocked. . Will let you know how it turns out. Thanks, Paul

O.K., I read up on everything to make sure the carb was the way it should be. I took off the carb, double checked the float and that is perfect. Added 1 more washer, dialed in the PMS and she runs great. It's amazing, when you read ahead for instructions, ( you know we don't like to read instructions or ask for directions ) Thanks for all the help. Paul
