Well for 1000' with HC and slipons, and Mikuni jets ....
170 main
35 pilot (stock)
Needle on 5th clip
PMS about 2.5 to 3 turns out
Do the WOT to test the main. I suspect that the 170 will be too rich so have a 167.5 and 165 in hand. I would guess the 165 will do the trick.

If he is using Kury's jetting recommendations, he might have a stock needle. That would explain the monster main.

Gram's right. I forgot to mention that my jet kit came from Factory Pro and the needle in the kit is fatter than the stock one. All jets are genuine Mikuni.

I wasn't aware that Factory Pro made a jet kit for the R*.
Do you have a link to this jet kit?

I agree with Gram ... if you have a fatter needle than stock, you're going to need a larger main .... but I don't know how large.
In any case, the WOT process is the same. I'd leave the jets in that you have, move the clip to 5 on the needle and try the WOT with current main. If it's OK, drop down one size and try again. Keep dropping the main until you get lean symptoms .... that's the main for your setup.

Interesting .... you're the guinea pig.
You can't run it lean enough to cause damage. Once you get it 'lean' the bike starts to run poorly.
This is the biggest problem folks seem to have ... the fear of running too lean and damaging the motor when in fact we tend to run out motors too rich and cause problems.

With your temperature swings (used to live in Mesa) you might need to rejet seasonally if you get too lean. Just right in the hot summer temps will most likely be lean in the winter.
You could test in the evening when its not quite as hot to try and find some middle ground. Either way you need to know what main your bike is going to work best with and the WOT is the best way to do it without some kind of exhaust analyzer.
