Doc I have the 37.5 Pilot in my 1700, Is yours a 1600? I had dropped to the 35 but I suffered -hesitation, and sluggishness on take off. Currently I have great response, accel, excellent cruse. I have not had a chance since Saturday to ride enoug to see what the mpg is now, (with the 35 I got 43 w/2up) What do you think- as Musky says just leave it alone? Wousl it do any good to drop the needle from 3 w/.020 spacer to 3? What could I expect?

Best to start your own post with your specific carb info.

The needle is the major circuit under most 'normal' cruising throttle postions so lowering the needle (moving the clip up) will lean out the midrange.

You don't need to leave it alone, especially if you like to tinker. Change only one thing at a time so that you can see what affect it has for your situation.

Rules of thumb ....

Down on the main leans the top end
Move the needle down (move clip up) leans the midrange
Down on the pilot jet leans the idle

But ... the circuits overlap so if you're rich on one you affect the other.

Doc,

I did the WOT test as suggested. I started in 4th at about 55 and ran it up to 80, backed off the throttle between an 1/8 and 1/4, and she basically acted like I didn't do anything. It just kept accelerating like I didn't even touch the throttle. I did it a couple of times to compare results and got the same response each time. I assume that means I should be pretty close on my main.

I also understand a typical setting on the PMS is around 2 1/2 turns out. I was going there next to see where it is. Lastly, I don't know where the clip is on the needle since my dealer did it and can't tell me where he set it Since it's a Speedstar needle I also wasn't sure if the setting even relates to the Baron's needle settings.

What it sounds like though is I may be in pretty good shape as for the jetting but may have identified a different possible problem..........my riding style! I will lay off the blipping As for shift points, I usually go to 2nd at 25, 3rd at 45-50, 4th at 55-60 and 5th over 65. For general cruising I stay in 3rd between 40 and 45 and do most riding in 4th from 45-60. I ride mostly secondary roads so I spend a lot of time in 4th. Is this reasonable? I also run it through the gears a couple of times during each ride, like I'll take 2nd to 40 or 45 and 3rd to 60-65. Every once in a while I'll take it to the limiter in 2nd and 3rd which i have set at 5000. That gets me to about 55-60 in 2nd and close to 90 in 3rd. Someone told me once it is a good idea to do that every so often????? Said it helps clear the carbon out?

Any advice on these shift points? It really seems to run pretty good, meaning good acceleration and no flat spots and I'm more concerned with the performance than the gas mileage so maybe 39-40 isn't bad for my driving habits If this all seems fairly normal for the conditions, maybe I should leave well enough alone........I don't want to try and fix soemthing that isn't broke!

I tend to be one of those people always wondering if i have things set up as good they get. but sometimes fiddle too much until I screw something up .

I'd leave the main where it is; it sounds OK.

Next pull the black cap off the carb and pull the needle out. The needle is held in the carb with a white plastic retainer. Your need small needle-nose pliers to reach it. Make sure you pull the retainer straight up; don't wiggle it or you will break one of the retaining tabs on the retainer.

There a spring under the retainer which likes to 'jump' out onto your garage floor and make you spend 1 hr looking for it.

Check the clip position. If you move the clip up the needle (towards the blunt end) you are leaning out the midrange. 'Normaly' you should find (from the top) a washer, clip, white spacer, washer.

It's hard to make a recommendation without knowing where it's at but a safe bet would be 1/2 clip so for the 'normal' setup move the clip up one slot and add another washer on the bottom (washer, clip, spacer, washer, washer).

The PMS depends upon your other circuits. Best to set it with a tach but you can get it close by slowly turning it in until the bike stumbles, out until it stumbles, then set it halfway between these two points.

Your shifting/riding style looks OK to me.

I get about 43 mpg but I'm running a bit rich on the bottom end in the summer months.

Many thanks Doc! First chance I get I'll get in there and check it out! Do I need to buy some washers or will there be enough to reconfigure? If so, do I get them from Yamaha or are they just plain washers?

Some jet kits have extra washers, some don't.

These are not regular washers. The are of a specific thickness which can be identified by the colour of the washer (silver, purple, gold). You need another silver washer, which is equivalent to 1/2 clip on the needle.

If you don't have them in you kit then go to any bike dealer and pick some up.

Thanks Doc. I assumed it was "something special". I'll be going by the dealer and getting an assortment!
