AHHHHH CARB JETTING NIGHTMARE 5 Months ago
Let me start of by saying this forum is great I have found alot of great information. I am completely stuck right now. I am really good with cars and motorcycles but my carb is handing it to me right now. I bought my R* "totaled" the guy before me said. He droped it and ripped pipes off ,air cleaner off, dented the tank and dented side cover. I ordered new pipes put them on hit the starter the bike stared right up. I got a BAK from barrons. I imediatly took the carb off to jet it. i replaced the needle with the barons one. When i opened the bottom he had a 192 jet in it. I decided to put the barons recomended set up in. The carb was reinstalled. Now the bike wouldnt start. I then putt the original jet and needle back in. The bike still woulnt start. I gave her some starting fluid fired right up. The bike wouldnt keep idle she kept stalling out. Then when I opened throttle she was way rich. when i backed off throttle the engine would stay reved i had to grab clutch to slow down. This tells me jet is way to rich. I put barrons stuff back in. I have played with a couple jets needle settings and PMS screw settings..... The result is always i need starting fluid to get her started. She does not idle but will run if i keep her reved..... I am thinking its the pilot system in the carb but am stuck. Hopefully you guys have some input. If not to the dealer i go cause i am stuck..

PS I also have HC pistons and dyna ignition. I have never been to the dealer for any work i am really good with stuff usually. So I really dont want to start now.

Check the float level and make sure it moves freely. Check the float needle to make sure it moves freely. Take the gas line off the carb and make sure you have a good flow.

Floats move freely the needle moves good too. the line has good flow. If the level of gas is to high in the bowl how could this effect starting.. Thanks for some more suggestions i will check out the fuel level.

If he laid it down on the right side the carb may be damaged. Take it off the bike and thoroughly inspect if for cracks.

Set the float level to spec.

Put it back together with:

170 main
35 pilot
Clip on 5th slot from the blunt end (top) and white spacer under the clip and then a silver washer.
PMS on 2 1/2 turns out from fully seated

When you turn the key you should hear the fuel pump ticking for a moment. When you work the throttle, look down the carb throat ... you should see fuel being squirted momentarily into the throat.

doc should have you right on... keep in mind a properly jetted roadstar won't start without the choke full on unless she's still warm from running. If his setting doesn't get you anywhere, I'd recommend cleaning the carb really well... if a small piece of dirt or other foreign body is stuck in the pilot circut, it may be restricting fuel especially during idle and starting... I like the product "sea foam" for cleaning carbs.. ~Guido

Tonight looks like i am taking the carb back out and a part clean her and put it all back together. I dont think the carb was damaged she ran good before i decided to mess with things. I will try docs set up and see from there. I am hoping i just got some dirt or something in pilot set up. That is where my problem is. The fuel pump does seem to be working and the accelerator pump seems to be ok to.

I am going to take the carb off this winter and have a look around, I notice that when I am going around 80 and yank back on the throttle I get some wicked detonation going on, I believe I am running rich at low throttle and lean at high, so things are going to have to change.
How much of this thing do I have to take apart to get to everything I need to get to??
