Vance & Hines Longshots HS question 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
|
|
Hello to all jetting experts!
I'm new here and I need your advice.
This weekend I'm going to install V&H Longshots HS pipes (without baffles) on my 2007 RS. To get the proper settings I would like to install also BAK at the same time so the question is: what kind of jetting settings should I use? Should I only follow the Baron instructions or is there any special set up required when using V&H Longshots HS?
Would appreciate any response.
Greetings from Germany.

For the Longshots and BAK, using the Baron's jet kit, I'd start with:
- 170 main
- stock pilot (35)
- clip on the 5th groove fromt the top (blunt end). From top to bottom you should have washer, clip, white spacer, silver washer.
- PMS about 2.5 to 3 turns out.
Read about the WOT test in the Tech Articles. Once the main is OK (may need a 167.5) then move the clip to 4th slot and test out.

Thanks a lot. Probably I would do it as you suggest.
One more question - you are recommending 170 main (or even 167.5) and in Baron instruction they recommend 175 for pipes without baffles. Why is there such a big difference? I'm not saying that you are not right - the question is what is the Baron instrucion good for? Is the 175 trully too big?
Best regards.

Short update.
I played a little bit with the carb. and I'm getting a little bit confused.
My first set up was 170 main and needle on the 4th groove with one washer. My impression was: a little bit too rich. I moved the needle to the 3 grove - result: too lean. Put the 2 wascher leaving it on the 3rd and it seems that at higher revs. it works ok (maybe little bit too lean) but it's way too lean at idle.
The OEM main jet was 182.5 - my question is: did I put bigger main (170) or smaller? I saw the table Mikuni vs Dyno but what about Mikuni vs Baron? I think about installing 172.5 main jet - am I going in right direction? Baron says - 175 and 5 groove... Im totaly confused. Is the a difference between OEM 1.6 engine carb. settings and 1.7?

Both the 1600 and 1700 are jetted similar ... you get more differences in location rather than the size of the engine.
Barons jet kits use Mikuni jets.
Are you running the stock pilot? How did you set your PMS? Why do you think it's runing lean at idle?
How did you make the determination that it was "too rich"? Did you settle on the 170 main from the WOT test?

Sorry ... missed your first reply to me.
We've found the 175 is generally to rich of a main for most folks. The starting point setup seems to work for most folks, from the driveabilty point of view, and gives good gas mileage. For the 1700, it's also important to not run richer than need as they tend towards SVS and the need to add additives to stave it off.

Hello,
if the Baron use Mikuni jets than it means that I changed from bigger one OEM 182.5 into smaller one 170 to get better performance? Sounds strange... More air requires more fuel so it should be the other way...
Yes - I'm running the stock pilot and the PMS was apprx. 3.5 turns out (ore even more). I think it's running lean at idle because it needs choke even if the engine is off for about one hour after longer ride on sunny day. The same on the begin of the ride. The psss between idle and higher revs is not smooth - it's like a hole between idle and normal engine revs. Why do I think it's running rich? I could smell the fuel when I was accelating having 170 main and needle on the 4th grove (just an impression). Over here in Europe we have the standard unleaded fuel with 95 octans - maybe it has something to do with it?

It's not just the size of the jet. You also need to look at the difference in the taper of the needles. The aftermarket needle has a lot more taper. Doc explained the process to get the bike jetted so you should be ready to go. You should also try the choke knob trim - Choke kob trim
