cat correct ... check the slipon to head joint first.
The leak does not have to be very large for them to backfire.
If you get just one loud backfire on hard acell the decel then it may not be an exhaust leak. You may need to tweak you jetting slightly.
The OEM gaskets can be used a number of times ... unless you'ver really distored them from tightening the pipes down hard.

It's not one loud backfire. It's definitely popping. Only on hard decel.

Started taking off my slip ons today to check for leaks and use some RTV at connection. Well, I think I found out the problem. I can't get the lower slip on off - so it's probably not leaking at the connection. But - looks like it was straining the connection at the head and I see some browning around inner chrome ring on front pipe - head connection.
For now I took entire lower pipe off from head back. sprayed some WD40 at connection. I guess penetrating oil would be better. Once (and if) I can get the slip on off, I'll line things up and see if I can get a better fit at the head.
Did I see somewhere that head bolts (for pipe) should only be 2.2 ft/lbs?

Shacky, Did you get your problem fixed? How does the bike sound now compared to stock exhaust? Would you classify as really loud? I ordered some Kromewerks slip on mufflers today, and I am concerned about how loud they will be. I guess if they are too loud I can always replace them with the stock and put them on Ebay.

No. Still getting some popping sometimes more like a backfire. I don't think I have a leak so I need to try the PMS or move up to larger PMS jet.
I like the sound. I would calssify them as loud. When I had them off the bike you can see straight through them so there isn't a lot of resistance. I would say they are like glasspacks on 60's car.
I can keep the noise down. But when you get on it, you know it. Wife thinks they're a tad loud. But I told her it's for safety - if they don't see me they'll hear me
