I went out yesterday for a 200 mile ride and I can't seem to get over 40 mpg on my 2006 r*. Now this wasn't drag racing either, country roads 45-65 mph.
I have usual, pipes, BAK, Dyna so I won't bore you with details.
Current setup - Barons Kit: 167.5, 4th clip, 2 1/8 PMS.
Past setup - Barons 167.5, 3.5 clip, 1 7/8 PMS but she stuttered a bit and I didn't like it. I will say I got 47 mpg under the same riding conditions as above.
My question is: Am I on the cusp with the past setup and should I have turned out the PMS to alleviate the stuttering when cold, pulling away just after startup.
Any ideas would be great. Getting tired of tuning and want to be done with it.

I believe you may have been pretty close on your previous setup. I ended up with the needle at 3.5 and the PMS at about 2. One other thing I did was to screw the accelerator pump duration adjustment to where it was only about 1 turn out. I wonder if it's possible that the stutter could be cause by a momentary flooding condition caused by the accelerator pump?
I found that my bike was running rich with the clip in the fourth position and my mileage was down under 40. Interestingly, when I had the clip in the fourth position I had to dial the PMS screw out further (richer) than when it was in the 3.5 position. Seems counter intuitive to me that should be the case but I couldn't get the bike to run properly without putting the PMS around 3.
One thing that is different about my setup is the main jet. I put in the 172.5 per Baron's instructions and just never got around to changing it to something smaller. Not sure how much effect it has on the lower end (has to be some) but I don't notice any performance problems through the whole throttle range and mileage is consistently 50 mpg or better.

Thanks Pday. I'll give it a try. Just wondering if my location has anything to with it. I am in Burlington, Ontario, Canada about an hour north of Niagara Falls, New York. It is now in the mid 50's to low 60's. Does colder weather require more or less fuel for the bike to run properly?

I`m thinking were starving these big engines ,try a bigger main and then adjust the PMS.I `ve been working with Dyno jet tho and not Baron`s.I`ve gone the route
down to smaller mains and missed the performace of the bigger ones and never got the milage I was seeking.Black Cherry Bomb has a DJ210 and getting over

Colder weather does affect the MPG...I get worse MPG in colder weather here in PA, USA...my theory is that the gas does not expand quite as much as when it is warmer and heated...thus more gas dumps into the carb when it is cold whereas a higher mixture of gas and air dumps in when warmer...essentially, when colder gas is more dense...
of course, I must have slept through the fluid thermodynamics classes in law school and this is just my own, probably incorrect, theory...but, lower MPG is normal in colder weather even if my reasoning is wrong

Yes, you're very close.
Probably most of your riding is on the needle so that's where you'll see the best gas mileage vs the clip position. Your mileage seems to confirm this (40 mpg on 4th clip to 47 on 3.5)
I find it unusual that you went leaner on both the clip and the PMS. I would have expected that if you went from 4 to 3.5 on the needle (leaner) you would need to turn the PMS out a bit (richer) to compensate. You should try the past setup and try fine tuning the PMS.
As is gets colder you need to go richer. Cold air is denser so it leans out your mix. In most cases you just need to turn the PMS out at this time of year and in as it begins to warm up in the summer months.
Any ideas would be great. Getting tired of tuning and want to be done with it.
It's sometimes not an easy road to haul but you'll be rewarded eventuallly.
On past posts you have mentioned your are in Crystal Beach....Hope that bad storm didn't affect you to much.

Hey guys,
I've been wondering about my gas mileage as well since I was running about 42mpg and the only change I made was to switch out my K&N filter element in my BAK for the oiless Amsoil one. My mileage dropped to about 39 now. The more i think about it though, the weather has also gotten colder since the switch and I run Amsoil 20W50 synth so i was wondering if heavy oil in the colder weather won't effect mileage as well. I know from my truck that they now recommended 5W20 and I understand the reason for that was to improve the gas mileage. I wonder if the cold weather could have that much effect. Thoughts or experiences on this?
