Anyone have the link to the Right Side Drive? Seeing this about the front pulley has me worried so I'm gonna check into it. If I do before one is posted I'll do an article on it.

The worn pulley is a result of folks running the belt too tight. If you keep the correct tension or little loosen then you get more miles than you'll have the bike.

Chain drive may be an option as well...Doc.
Yes, I am shortening the wheelbase, too.
(Should be about 6 inches.)

Re:Front drive pulley warning 5 Months ago
Since you have been there, done that, I have some front drive pulley questions you might be able to help with.

I caught a stone between the belt and one of the nylon rollers (sliders) by the front drive pulley. Maybe taking my belt guard off was not such a great idea after all, but it sure looks better without it.

Since there was a lot of red rust powder coating everything, I pulled the drive pulley. The bolt was tight and it seemed pretty solid, but after removing the bolt, the pulley was loose and wobbly. The splines on the shaft were clearly worn. Now my questions are:

1 - I would guess that there has to be movement to cause the wear, so does that mean that the pulley is not as tight as it appears?

2 - Can the bolt be tightened to eliminate ALL movement under load, thus eliminating all wear.

3 - If there is movement of the pulley as the worn splines would suggest, would greasing the two parts before assembly have been beneficial?

4 - Are new pulleys and driven shafts a loose fit? If so, why? Every spline and gear setup I have seen has had a snug, machined fit.

The tab for repairs are about $650 for replacement of the drive components and another $525 to replace the belt. My girlfriends Vespa did not cost much more.

My friends with Harleys are suggesting I should not have been so smug about Japanese engineering and reliability (25,000 miles without a problem) as they rode off this weekend. Hmmm, maybe I should have kept the pink Vespa.

Anyway, constructive comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Nelson

Proper belt tension...and keeping an eye on the nut...
that's it.

(I do have an entire transfercase that you could swap out parts/pieces or the whole unit...and the oil tank...if you wanted. $100.00 plus shipping if that helps you out!) Any Harley guys do that? LOL

An H-D Transmission. Very Good!

I might take you up on that. What is the condition of the splines on the shaft?

Also, I'm just 'flipping' the rear wheel and re-spacing to keep the belt running true...this also means rear caliper relocation to the left.

Would you not also have to remount your rear tire so that the rotation direction remains the same?

Does anyone have a picture of a healthy pulley installed with the case open?

Yes Cracka...

The tire must also change directions, one of the easier things to fix. LOL

Here again is a picture of the pulley mounted on the right.

(A .375 thick spacer is required behind the pulley to allow the nut to tighten properly, and give you oil line clearence.)
