Jetting Help 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi there, I am going to rejet tonight as I am having a number of problems. The bike wont stay running, or it really wants to stall at least, unless i leave the choke pulled out for quite awhile when I start it up. I also have to play with the idle screw to increase the idles otherwise she wants to stall. Then as I am stopped at a red light or something it sounds like it is about ready to take off, so I turn down the idle screw and can finally put the choke all the way in after riding for 3-4 min, and this is after a couple min warmup prior to taking off. The bike doesnt seem to want to accelerate very well, and really doesnt want to idle. When I shut the bike off it sounds like there is fuel igniting as it has these poof sounds, not popping. So here are my settings and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for me on changes to make. Someone told me they thought I needed a bigger pilot jet.

175 Main
Needle 4th, washer,clip, spacer,washer
PMS 3 1/2 turns out
Cobra Speedster slashdowns
Barons BAK
self ported manifold,
AIS removed
stock pilot

I live in Edmonton, Alberta elevation 2200ft

Make sure you have no air leaks on the intake or exhaust. And make sure your float level is good. Start with the 167.5 main. Have the 170 handy. Set the clip in the 5th groove from the blunt end. PMS at 2 1/2 to 3 turns out. Do the WOT. If the main checks out go to the 4th groove and tweak the needle and PMS from there.

Thanks for the reply Musky. Checked last night for air leaks, none, and float level appears good as well. In regards to the WOT test, do I want it to do nothing ie maintain, or do I want to lose some momentum. I am a little confused by the article. Again, thanks for your help

I like it to maintain. The problem with the WOT is it won't tell you if the main is rich. So losing some momentum doesn't tell you how rich the main is. Just says that it isn't lean. After you get the jetting set up ride it for a tank of gas and see how it goes. Sometimes it take a while for the new settings to fully settle in.

Try different groves and adding a washer under the spacer.
