Changed pipes change jetting? 3 Years, 9 Months ago
I have a 2001 roadstar. I put Baron Nasty habits (no baffles) BAC, and a barons jet kit. The Bike ran like a scalded cat and I ran a fairly consistent 48 to 52 mpg. I recently changed to vance & hines shortshots staggerd. The bike now seems to be running rich. The plugs show a fairly good burn, but the pipes are black and sooty. My mpg has dropped to 32 to 40 mpg. Should I rejet or will tweeking the needle position solve this?

Odd... just changing from open pipes to open pipes shouldn't make that much difference. But I would try adjusting the PMS first.

The vance and hines pipes do have baffles in them. I just ran out and re-checked to make sure.

You have added some back pressure now. If you had rejetted for pipes with no baffles and now have pipes with more back pressure, you may need to rejet to compensate. I will leave the recommendations to the experts, but yes, in this case I would say you may need too.

Im thinking you are right. Believe this had a 165 main in it originally. When I got the BAC and jet kit, was changed to 170. Hoping for a expert who has had the same thing happen.

Try setting the PMS using the in / out method.

I ordered a barons PMS screw and am waiting for it before putting carb back together. Do you think if I drop the needle a notch that it will help the rich problem?
