Doc--
I don't know if he resolved his problem, but I noticed the same thing...I actually had my
PMS seated 2 days ago and the bike didn't stumble...
It's been running too rich. The front plugs were tan, but the back cylinder ones were totally black & caked with carbon. A few seconds with a Dremel and a soft brass brush attachment and they were nice & clean.
I've never gotten over 35 MPG, whether it was stock (when I got it) or my setup I've been running since August, which was:
DJ 175 Main
Stock
pilot jet
clip on 4th groove on DJ needle
PMS at 2.75 turns out
as of 2 days ago, I changed it to:
DJ 175 Main
Stock pilot jet
clip on
3rd groove on DJ needle
PMS at
2 turns out
Running the Speedstar K&N filter & Hard Krome 3" Big Straights. I haven't had a chance to run it much (at all) since then, but it didn't hesitate or stumble or cough, and I revved the hell out of it in the garage. It's not the same as riding, I know, but it's COLD.
I'm hoping I leaned it out enough to improve mileage and stop the carbon fouling. What really confused me though was that I was sitting there adjusting PMS listening to the engine, and got the damn screw turned allthe way in and the thing never stumbled.

So I just turned out 2 and left it. Leaner than it was, but it kinda confused me.
