Doc-
yes, I did the WOT, and when I let off, even slightly, its backfiring, and if I roll on it just slightly, it will stop and hold accel. Problem is, I didn't go into it too far, as I didn't ahve the jets you suggested. I think I will go buy all the different ones or a kit, however it is done, so I can start from scratch, with the ones I need.
Sounds like there are a million "starting places" tho

There's really only one starting place. Get your main right and the rest will follow nicely along. Get the main wrong and everything else is compensating for a bad main (like getting lost in a maze). You will get it Jason. Doc's got you on the right track. I don't do anything else (at least not seriously) until the main is dialed in.
Make sure any jets you buy are Mikuni brand (its what almost everyone else knows about and can help with).

Doc-
My bad, I just went a read the WOT again, and realized I didn't do really what I was needing to do...I opened it up, it backfired, I thoght it failed, and I was rolling into and off the throttle to see what needed to be done to not backfire...I wasn't holding it and paying attention to rate of acceleration, nor was I grasping the concept of the main jet.
Yeah, I am tired of taking it apart and putting it together, and I think that is getting my frustration levels pushing my timeline to fixing it....and I am not reading and studying close enough.
Deep breath, here we go again
ugh, just called my dealer, they only carry DJ, and they of course were trying to get me to take it to them to jet. lol

you do know that you don't have to take the carb off the bike each time all can be done with it on the bike saves time and frustration.

You can have the dealer order the jets you need from Parts Unlimited. They come in packs of 4 (which is cheaper than having the dealer order 1 factory) I have the same air box and my settings ended up being.
Main 170
Pilot 35
stock air screw
PMS 21/4 turns
needle 2nd groove from top white spacer and 1 washer
42 to 47 mpg
I did alot of changing and with the Kuryakyn kit this has been my best thus far.

New question...haha
So I am trying to find MAINs and I have called all 3 dealerships in my area, and I called Cycle Gear...and go figure, the Stealers dont have them, but CG has a Mikuni 170 in stock...but it is HEX head.
Is that the wrong one? are they interchangeable?? thoughts?
Thanks guys, im carb-ignorant, so you are learning me each step of the way!

If you have an HD dealer near you try them. They usually carry Mik jets.

No ... the large round head jet is the one you want.
As Musky suggested or there should be some places on the internet from where you can order them .... or you can buy a complete kit from Baron.

ok, did the WOT test, and it is the middle one, no real change with the letting off 1/8. Still accelerated pretty much the same, no real feel to the roll off.
coming home after the WOT I noticed that I am really boggy in the 1-2 gear range. Almost stalled a couple times in the shift. Seemed like I gave it gas and it bogged. So now I guess the lower end needs some work.

see above post...
I have noticed that a 1.5 on the PMS has really helped out the stalling, and seems to almost be good. Is there something I should be concerned with? Still have a ton of backfiring, especially when "gettin on it" and shifting, it will BANG in between gears. Letting off the gas, clutch out, it pops and grumbles quite a bit. The grumble is fine, the pop is getting old. Change the pilot now?
Like I said, my WOT test basically had the same accel. when I let off the throttle, not bogging, no change in sound really. Still pulled at the same rate.
Also, when idle or just after warm up, I smell alot of gas in the fumes ??
