OMG MPG WTF 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
I have never, ever been able to get better than 37 MPG, even with the bike leaned out just to the point where any leaner and it would have ran like crap (I speak from experience ). SO, I pretty much resolved myself to never being able to hit that Holy Grail of 40 MPG. Just deal with it and enjoy the ride, right?

Most recently, I was commuting 100 miles per day round trip, with 95% of it being at 80 MPH+ on the highway. I was ranging between 32 and 34 MPG.

So, one of the things I did while I was tinkering recently (besides pinching my wires in half ), is I enriched the PMS from 2 to 2.75 because of some decel fluttering.

Anyway, I've been reading everyone's posts here about MPG, and the biggest MPG killer seemed to me to be the high speeds. Before I destroyed my wiring, I wanted to test the theory. So today I took a nice, leisurely ride from Santa Fe to Taos...didn't jump on it...never went above 70 MPH... and I'm here to tell you, what a difference a few MPH makes!

174.4 miles, refilled with 3.778 gallons...that's 46.241397564849126521969295923769 MPG!

Not only did I make it over 40 MPG, I made it WAY over!

There...just wanted to share...and gloat.

Better calculate it again

To get a good reading you need to average it out over 3 or 4 tanks. But it's good to hear things are going the right direction for you finally.

Damn, Musky, yer right...don't know what happened the first time...when I figure it again, it only works out to 46.161990471148755955532027527792 MPG.

Hey, I did it once, so I don't care if it goes back to 34 MPG now. Actually, since I no longer have the job, I no longer have the long distance high speed commute...should get better no matter what.

My numbers agree... pushing it up over 75 mph and beyond, and the Road* gets very thirsty. Mid 30's, for me. A few weeks ago, on a long trip, I topped the tank to the max, then ratcheted down and rode the bike in the 55 to 60 mph range for an even hundred miles to see how I'd do, then topped the tank again to the max. 2.3 gallons. 44 mpg. (I do worse than that with my old Virago 750.)

Roadkill I came through there up to Pagosa and road around last month. On the way up running 70-75 got about 40. When I got to Co. on those holly crap roads running I guessing about 45 average got 53 MPG . I thought my gauge was stuck.

Not surprised .... I'm sure you remember why the 55 mph nationwide speed limit was imposed.

The higher the speed the greater the drag, that's why you start to see decrease in mileage.

Yep it really is the speed, I write down all my averages and when I get to ten tankfuls I add them together, then divide by 10..(number of tank fills). I do run a little easier than most 60-65 avg. speed, just a 'jack rabbit' start every now and then for cleaning puposes, but my last 10 tanks averaged out to 47.14 m.p.g. I can live with that, but I will say when I hammer it for a whole tank it drops to 39-40. Oh well, still 3 times better than my Z 71.

Not Much new to add I also get mid 40's on my lower speed commuting. But it drops quite a bit when running 80+ on my road trips across Wyoming, Montana ect.
