Leaner or Richer 5 Years, 7 Months ago
Went to the DFW Roadies Garage Day yesterday and got some help wrenching on my bike. We removed the AIS. The intake manifold was ported. We also removed the brass plug and put in the MaxAir adjustable PMS in the carb. No rejetting was done.

Gearhead, the guy helping me, didn't count the turns on the old screw as his experience told him 1 1/2 turns is a good place to start. The bike hesitated a little when taking off from a stop. If I blip the throttle first and get the revs up it doesn't happen. So I turned up the idle a little. It's not really that high. Best guess by all the riders there is around 900 rpm.

The question that came up was does the porting of the manifold make the engine require a richer mix or a leaner mix. I plan to read the carburetor article tonight as I forget whether turning the screw in or out increases or decreases the fuel. Still running the stock air box with 5 1" holes and the stock air filter. Pipes are stock but drilled to stage 2. Bike runs strong once it is rolling.

Pretty sure porting = rich. Turning the PMS in = Leaner, out = richer

What Musky said, and also remember that the Maxmix screw is 2:1. 2 turns on the stock screw is the same as 1 turn on the mixmax. So 1.5 turns is equal to 3 turns stock. might try to lean it out just a touch.

Post edited by: widetrack, at: 2006/10/27 09:42

Pulled the air box started the bike. Reved the motor and fuel came flying out of the carburetor throat. I don't think that's right. Turned the MaxMix PMS all the way in. It was set at almost 2 turns. Turned it back out about 1 1/8 turn. Reved it again no bog no fuel bath. Found the carburetor tube that should connect to the Gas Cannister down by the AIS uncovered. Put a cap on it. Put the air box back on. Warmed the bike up and took it for a ride.

No hesitation or bog at initial start in first. Runs strong and smooth during hard acceleration. Exhaust slightly louder. No backfire on hard decelleration. Best it's ever run think I'' try it like this for a while.

Stock air box drilled with 5 1" holes. Stock air filter, ported intake manifold. MaxMix PMS, stock jetting. Stage 2 stock exhaust. Removed AIS.
