I can turn it all the way in and not notice a huge difference. I don't get backfiring or anything else. Too far out = too rich and fouling plugs. Too far in = too lean and almost white plugs. It all depends on your jetting, porting, air cleaner and heavy throttle hand. IMHO. You may be turning it too fast .... turn it 1/2 turn at a time and take a break ... have a sip of beer.
