Jetting Confusion 5 Years, 6 Months ago
Alright, the BAK is in my hands and I am ready to install it when I read the instructions from Baron???
Basic info:
06 R*
Sea Level
Cobra Speedster Slash Cuts with Baffles
AIS in place

Road Star Forum Recommendations:
170 main
4th clip
2.5 out on PMS

Baron's Recommendations for 1700 04-06 models with pipes with baffles
172.5 main
5th clip
3.5 out PMS

The Barons seems intuatively to be a very rich set up. Are they recommending this set up to avoid damage from over lean condition???

I want to do this now so if you are out there please advise.

Thank you for you help. You all have really helped me find my way in Tinkerville, and I am looking forward to many more adventures as we work the best out of this Scooter.

Hey CB

It's pretty hard to get these bikes too lean and still be able to ride them. The 170, 4th, 2.5 is A LONG way from lean. The good thing is you can alway adjust if you don't like what you did. The bad news is that once you start you will change it just to see if you can get it better even if it is running great.

Might want to think about porting your manifild while your at it too.

Post edited by: Musky, at: 2006/11/18 08:03

Both are just recommendations of where to start. In the end you will have to adjust for your specific conditions.

I prefer the 170 main as I find the 172.5 a bit on the rich side. Same with the clip on 5; gas mileage is really affected.

The PMS does not matter as you will need to re-adjust it after you've nailed down the main and the needle.

So in brief ..... don't sweat the difference. Just pick one setting, run the WOT test to get the main right and then play with the clip setting on the needle. Finally adjust the PMS to get the highest idle.

Just by way of example, I used to run a 170 main with my pipes (Nasties). When I installed more restrictive baffles I had to lower my main to a 167.5 .... and I think I'm still running to rich on the top end.

Thank you for the input. I went with your advice and started with the 170, 4th groove. The bike started, idled and ran great. I did a WOT test and it performed perfectly. I did a bunch of stop and go riding an the bike never got hot. The carb has stopped percolating over and other than an almost inperceptible hestiation a I go from 1/4 to 1/2 throttle the set up seems near perfect. I will monitor fuel consumption and read the plugs to see how it is going in the next few months.

As for the new PMS Adjusment Screw, one can use it without burning you fingers if you are careful. The air filter and backing plate have to come off but then it is easy to adjust. Probably worth the money if you need to change the PMS often.

My R* is running stronger than ever and it feels good. Next the manifold and Dyna 3000.

Thanks again.

Not sure if this is new news or not. Barons now offers an easy to use PMS screw

That is the PMS screw I was talking about. Some of the others were interested to know if you could use it without burning your fingers. With the filter and backing plate off it is very easy to access the PMS Adjustment Screw and make changes. The knob has a spot on it to make it easy to count turns. A small price to pay to make adjustments simple.
