Air Filter 5 Years, 7 Months ago
Hi Doc, here's something different, I took a Webber Ramflo air filter, had my buddy machine an adapter to mount the filter and also mount to the bike. Now I have plenty of air, question the jetting, currently I am running V&H pipes and a Dynojet kit. I have a DJ175 for a main jet, stock pilot, mixture screw 3 turns out and the needle is set in the third grove. In an earlyer forum before the the new filter,I was having problems with the plugs burning to rich and ypur advice was to turn in the mixture screw until the bike stumbled and then turn it out until it stumbled, then turn it half way between these 2 points and that would be my starting point. I tried this with the new filter and I can turn the mixture screw just about all the way in before it affects the idle, same in the other direction, so any thoughts where I go from here.

Thanks for any help

Charlie

Doc--

I don't know if he resolved his problem, but I noticed the same thing...I actually had my PMS seated 2 days ago and the bike didn't stumble...

It's been running too rich. The front plugs were tan, but the back cylinder ones were totally black & caked with carbon. A few seconds with a Dremel and a soft brass brush attachment and they were nice & clean.

I've never gotten over 35 MPG, whether it was stock (when I got it) or my setup I've been running since August, which was:
DJ 175 Main
Stock pilot jet
clip on 4th groove on DJ needle
PMS at 2.75 turns out

as of 2 days ago, I changed it to:
DJ 175 Main
Stock pilot jet
clip on 3rd groove on DJ needle
PMS at 2 turns out

Running the Speedstar K&N filter & Hard Krome 3" Big Straights. I haven't had a chance to run it much (at all) since then, but it didn't hesitate or stumble or cough, and I revved the hell out of it in the garage. It's not the same as riding, I know, but it's COLD.

I'm hoping I leaned it out enough to improve mileage and stop the carbon fouling. What really confused me though was that I was sitting there adjusting PMS listening to the engine, and got the damn screw turned allthe way in and the thing never stumbled. So I just turned out 2 and left it. Leaner than it was, but it kinda confused me.

There could be a couple of reasons.

1. Either you are too rich on one of the other circuits. Looking at your main and needle settings I would not suspect that to be the cause.

2. You're turning the PMS in too fast. You need to turn it in 1/4 turn and let the carb stabilize then turn it in again so on ....

Other than that maybe the choke valve is not fully seated ??? Float level a bit high ???

Obviously something is going on if for the stock setup you were getting less than 35 mpg (after the break in period).

From the date of his post it looks like I've had a few rough weekends.

Doc hit on what I did wrong. I turned mine in without stopping and it didn't die. I don't know if it would eventually have because I turned it back out and then did some surfing on what was wrong. I found out it was me. As usual

I would have to think that you have too rich of a main jet if you your bike didn't stumble or anything when the pms was turned all the way in.
