Does my bike need to be rejetted? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
|

The typical answer seems to be-
"Do I need to rejet?
- Stock exhaust pipes and aircleaner:NO"
With all the cases of SVS occuring in stock or relatively stock bikes the answer doesn't seem to be as simple as saying "NO."
On one hand I would say that my bike generally runs a bit lean from what I can see reading the plugs. On the other hand it must be running rich because there is excessive carbon in the pipes and around the exhaust valve stem as viewed through the exhaust port.
Could I be running a normal a/f mixture at cruise and yet very rich at low speed or idle?
I would like to discuss jetting or carb adjustments for bikes that shouldn't normally require rejetting.
My bike is an '07 w/ V&H Long Shot (baffled) and K&N (added AFTER experiencing SVS). Already doing most everything for clearing up SVS with some success.
Thanks

NO.
"all the cases" are the few that you see on Forums. The majority of folks do not have problems. Why some and not others ... luck of the draw : .... variability in manufacturing probably.
But there is nothing wrong with rejetting a stock bike if you feel it's not running up to snuff.
I would agree with you .... regarding "Could I be running a normal a/f mixture at cruise and yet very rich at low speed or idle?" or vice versa.
You could initially try out the settings we normally recommend for a non-stock setup and work from there.

Is there a hand held exhaust sniffer that would tell you where your at mixture wise? I don't recall seeing one of those and I want one...

I said "all the cases" because probably less than 1% of the cases are documented here and Yamaha felt there enough cases to issue a bulletin on the problem.
I notice that Yamaha increased the size of the main jet from 165 to 182.5. Of course they did increase the size of the engine and the amount that they air box flows.
Who knows, maybe the best way to change my a/f mixture is to increase the air flow capability of my air box. I would love to install a wide band sensor and see what is really going on.
Assuming that most of my problem is at less than 1/4 throttle, does the pilot jet still affect the a/f mixture? Would it be wise to go less than 2.5 turns on the pms? If I'm thinking right, fewer turns would lean the pilot circuit. What would be the rpm range of the pilot jet?

At 1/4 throttle you're also on the needle.
You can turn the PMS in, but if it doesn't stumble then it's not really effective. Turning the PMS in and out slowly should cause the bike to stumble.

Its not a handheld, but it is consumer grade. Small box with a LED readout that has clamps for power made to run on battery (from your bike) power, and a sniffing rod that goes into your exhaust.
Its called a gastester. You should be able to find it with a google search. I have used one for years, on a variety of vehicles and it works great.
I don't remember the prioes now, but two models and the most expensive was just over $200 when I bought mine. I have the more expenive model, My buddy uses the less expensive one. If I had it to do over I would get the less expensive one.

Me too on the sniffer! Thanks Gram for the "heads up".

I don't have much else to add though on the jetting subject. IMO "jetting" is part and parcel to owning an internal combustion engine. It always pays to adjust em to their optimum A/F mixture. It all depends on what results YOU want and are willing to settle for. That's the bottom line.
Ride safe.........
