What are the symptoms of running lean? 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Having read many of the posts and articles about rejetting, I have become concerned about running lean. I know the symptoms of running rich, but how do I know if I'm running too lean? I've heard that pipes blue up if you are too lean, but I have heat shields and can't see em anyway. Do I have to pull the plugs to get a reading on this? I just want to know what to look for (guess I just want something to worry about)BTW I have aftermarket pipes and stock intake and stock jetting.
thanks
woody

If the center electrode is white or tan and you have some tan or chocolate around the outside you are fine. If the whole plug is pure white you are too lean. If the whole plug is sooty you are too rich----jack

Well Tampa, there's a problem with jiggling, alright, but not when I'm riding the Roadie. Seriously I just wanted to know if it could be running too lean without me recognizing the problem. I don't plan on pulling plugs until winter storage and if it makes a real noticeable difference to performance, then I'm OK. thanks

What does the inside of your pipes look like? Run your finger around the inside if you get just a little soot your OK if you get a LOT of soot you to rich.

Ya, just a little soot. And it runs fine except for a little bit of a flat spot at low rpms. I'm just anticipating a possible difference when I change over to the K&N in the stock box (not a BAK, just the replacement for the stock filter).

Try just tweaking the PMS a little first after you get the K&N on.

OK. Will let you know. I'm going to ride out the last of our decent weather up here, then when I put her away for the winter I'll change oil and replace air filter then. Not looking forward to having the Roadie parked in the basement for a few months.
