R* 1600 jetting for Kuryakyn 9420 hyper charger? 4 Months ago
I bought the bike used with the charger already installed (incorectly), and the carb still has the factory jets. The instalation instructions state that all I need is a #205 main jet, 1.5 pilot air bleed and a .020 shim under the needle. This will be my first time jetting a carb, and I'm wondering if I should go with the instructions or get a set of jets and go through the process of finding what works best?

I just replaced the straight pipes with a new complete factory exhaust, and I think the back pressure has already helped the performance alot.

Any experienced input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Powderburn

If you have the stock pipes on then you can leave the stock jetting in.

The stock pipes are restrictive so although you can get more air into the engine with the HC it's not going to get out any faster.

Thanks for the reply Doc. I was hoping a rejet would solve some problems. Now I'll have to do some more thinking to figure out why it runs like crap.

I'm confused ....

It runs like crap 'cause you have straight pipes, and HC and stock jetting or is it running like carp with the HC and stock pipes?

Actually the case was both. but now it's running like crap with the stock pipes and the HC. Though it is crappy, it is getting better I think. I do have a few issues that need dealt with, so I'm thinking it's not going to be as simple as a PMS adjustment.
According to page 6-1 (item #3)of the service manual there is supposed to be a hose that goes from the carb to a vaccume chamber (carburetor to solenoid valve hose). It appears that both the hose and vaccume chamber are missing and this port has been open untill just recently.
Acceloration is ok in 1st and second, but it feels that it should be better. In 3rd through 5th it is poor and usually bogs down before picking up rpm's, and the engine "chugs" it's way up to speed.
Due to a fuel leak from too much pressure I have bypassed the after market automotive fuel pump that was on the bike, and have ordered a 2.5 needle valve set to increase the fuel flow. I'm not sure at this point if the stock float valve is keeping up with the fuel demand or not., but the leak has stopped.

I hope I'm on the right track in solving these problems, and I'd appreciate any any input.

Well .... the automotive fuel pump may definitely be a problem. The only pump that I know of that can be used is from a Subaru. You can use a generic pump such as from Purolator but you need a pressure regulator ... our pumps only put out about 2.5 lbs.

Without a pump and stock carb it may/may not work under hard acceleration.

At this point you might as well start from scratch. With the stock carb jetting ....

- Remove pump (no use buy another stock)
- Replace needle valve
- Verify float level

Do the WOT test to verify if main is OK. If you find it isn't then buy a jet kit and start 'jetting'.

Re:R* 1600 jetting for Kuryakyn 9420 hyper charger 2 Months, 1 Week ago
I recently got my 3rd set of pipes for this bike, and put them on ( Cobra slash cut staggered, not sure what model. I also purchased a Baron's jet kit and PMS screw. I just finished chaanging the jet and mixture screw and took a short test drive. I found that I still have a few problems to sort out.

Here is how the bike is currently set up:

Kuryakyn 9420 hyper charger
170 main jet
Baron's needle (clip on 4th notch, all original parts in order on needle)
2.5 mm float valve
Fuel pump eliminated
1/4" fuel line (no filter)
Barron's PMS thumbscrew
Cobra slash cut staggered duals ( one piece pipe w/ heat shields and baffles)

Here are the issues that I found in the order that they happened, with possible corrections:

Would not start with choke on, started and idled fine with choke off. - PMS out of adjustment

Engine would not accelorate from idle / wants to stall on take off and at low speed / rpm - remove spacer from below needle clip

Engine cuts out and or sputters at sustained high RPM's - vent fuel cap, increase fuel line to 5/16"

I know that many of you have been through one or more of these conditions, and I would really appreciate your thoughts on correcting them. I have a few ideas, but I could be wrong.

On a positive note, this thing runs like a rocket going through the gears so I think I have the main right. I just need to clear up these other things and get on to the WOT test.

Its been awhile since you have posted this. Have you figured it out yet? If not I have close to the same set up as your describing and may be able to help.
