The simplest "fix" would be to just also open up the intake with at least a K&N air filter and a modified stock box so as to open up the intake air flow.

If they did rejet for an exhaust swap only, the intake mod may be all you need to fix your dilemma.

I can't give you any technical info, but I have an '07 just like yours. My mileage has been solidly in the 40s since the first tank. On a steady cruise in the hills, it nudges 50, for commuting, it drops to the lower 40s. The only mod is the AIS removal. Right now, I have almost 2k miles on her. I would find another dealer or mechanic.just curious, do you have the STOCK exhaust or have you changed out your exhaust system as well?

Sorry, I meant the same as in model and engine size. My exhaust is stock, so "just like yours" really wasn't. My bad.

Great explanation Gram, makes perfect sense. It sounds like the consensus is to find a new mechanic.

Re:Stock VS AfterMarket? 2 Months ago
Bought my 04' with 3000 mi. on it from a guy who apparently was afraid of the bike. I don't think it ever hit 2500 rpm for it's first 3000 miles. Also, he had added pipes, intake, and jetting and only used premium octane fuel. I was seeing low 30's mpg and thought it was too rich, lots of carbon on back of tailpipe, but plugs were burning just right. After a few runs with sea foam additive, backing off to mid, then regular gas, and riding it through the full rev range a few months, I'm now getting low to mid 40's mpg. Had the local shop check it out and dyno it and they're happy with the set-up and bike runs as good or better than new. Get it out on the road and really break it in. Best of luck.

My Scoot is an 06 R*. I have about 15,000 miles on it. The exhaust is Roadhouse Dooleys and I have a Pro-one are cleaner. I rejetted after the exhaust and before the Air cleaner and the milage went down. It went back up after I installed the K&N filter. The rest of the mechanics is stock. I'm getting low 40's on average now, if that's any help. Pat

Fuel Grade Issue!?! 2 Months ago
do you guys think that the FUEL GRADE (87, 89, 93) has anything to do with the gas mileage!?!

if so, how big of a difference are we talking about with this detail?

B4, Just use the manufacturer's recommended fuel for your bike.

What have you done or found out since initiating this thread?

I hope you have either rejetted to stock or installed an aftermarket air filter like a BAK with K&N or poorman's air kit.

when i tell the dealer tech that it needs to be set back to stock jet settings with the Cobra exhaust, he tells me I am smoking dope. he said it will burn too rich and the air flow will mess it up and the valves will stick and the pistons get burned up. honestly, i am not technically inclined about it so i really do not know the real deal here on this one. i just filled it up with "93" grade fuel to see if it makes a difference, but as of right now, i am not really seeing anything earth shaking as of yet.

i have not done anything with the air intake as of yet? i am not sure what to get, and/or can i use my air filter cover if getting a K&N filter? what will i need to get?

will it improve the gas mileage?

i am still stunned.

please help if you can! thanks.

You have got help. If you are going to keep the stock air box get a stock needle and jets. You can put a K&N in the stock box but that still doesn't require jetting.

B4, The quickest and most cost-effective mod is to modify your existing air box. I don't have the link to it or a description for the mod because I don't need it. I have a Barron's Air Kit with a K&N filter. Others on this site will give you the link. I hope this fixes your problem. It sounds like you need some real help from a fellow Roadie in your area or a new dealer that respects customers.

You may also want to search the Tech articles and learn all you can on carbs and visit the Mikuni website for more exciting info!

You are in a learning and trying and doing mode now. Don't feel inadequate or incapable. You can do it!

An alternative is to contact Cobra and find out from them if you MUST rejet with their pipes and stock air kit, and bring that info to the dealer.

Let Cobra give you the info to bring to the dealer if it confirms what has been said in this thread by members.
