Jetting: Somthing's not right. 2 Months ago
I just installed a 170 main jet and Baron's needle, to go with my hypercharger and Cobra pipes. I had a few other issues but I think I've gotten them worked out. Main problem right now is that the engine wants to die coming off idle. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you twist the throttle, it stumbles and wants to stall. Any idea where I need to start in solving this problem?

Sounds like it's not getting enough fuel. There are really onlt two things that would cause that. Lack of air or fuel.
I would go back in and check the last thing you changed (the needle) you may have it on the wrong clip. What brand jet to you have DJ or Minuki?

It was a Baron's kit with Mikuni parts. I followed the directions and started with the 170 main and clip on the 4th groove of the needle, and put everything back on it in the factory order. I have since removed the spacer under the clip, and it seems I can get a slight twist before it wants to die. I'm wondering if I should try the 3rd clip to see what happens?

Give us all your jet settings. Have you messed with the accell duration or timing screws? Is everything hooked up right on the HC?

Ok, I think I have it worked out. Without messing with any other stuff, I adjusted the clip position, and tested it with a long hose hooked to the tank. 3rd groove was worse, 5th was better but still a touch rough (and figured it would be even worse under load). Put the clip on the 6th position, and had smooth acceloration at idle and went for a test drive. It ran great at first, then started surging real bad and would stall out at low RPM's. This cleared up after a few miles, must have had some crap in the fuel line or carb to work through.
At this point I think I'm ready for the WOT test and some fine tuning..... I hope any way.

Thanks for your input so far, I'll follow up on how it works out. The real test will be how it runs on my way to work in about an hour (hope I get there in time ).

The needle adjustment was just what I needed, and man what a difference from before! Now it pulls in every gear, throttle response is great, and acceleration is unbelieveably better.
I think I still need to tweak the PMS a bit more, backfire on hard decel seems intermitant and I haven't played with it yet to find the sweet spot. Also she seems to be a bit rich at idle because it won't start and run at full choke when cold (runs briefly w/ black smoke & stalls), but will start unchoked with a little throttle and run 1/2 choked. I'm not sure what to do to correct this yet. I also vented the fuel cap as stated in the tech article, and replaced my fuel filter, flow is much better but still having a problem with sustained high RPM.

Here is my current set up:
Hypercharger
Cobra pipes
170 main jet
Baron's needle, clip on 6th groove no spacers
PMS 2.5 turns out
Accelerator pump adjusted
Cleaned & oiled air filter / new fuel filter
Altitude range 1,000 - 1,750 ft.

So far the only adjustments I've made are to the PMS and accelerator pump, are there other settings that should be checked or changed that would help in fine tuning? Also with my altitude range, how much can I expect it to help?

Powder, cheers!

I'd recommend you get started on WOT testing. I wont claim to know what some of the other guys here know about jetting, but, a 170 main seems a little lean for 1000 foot elevation. That may be why you're all the way out to the 6th clip on your needle.

Just my .02

Powderburn,

I'm not yet a R* expert, but I've jetted a few bikes in my day. One concern I would have is your needle being on the 6th groove. That's the bottom groove, right? In other words, the needle is as high as it can get, because the clip is on the bottom groove, correct? If that's the case, you're at an extreme in that area and I've found that's usually a problem. Perhaps a 172.5 main and the needle on the 3rd or 4th position would provide you with some info.

Also, what do your plugs look like? If they are solid black, then I would suspect that the needle is too high (clip low), causing the bike to flood slightly when you crack into 1/4 throttle or so.

Anyone think this is of the mark?

good luck!

Just to clearify, I am counting the needle grooves from the top blunt end toward the bottom tapered point. The sixth is the bottom most groove on the needle.

MidStar, What you said about this being an extreme makes alot of sense to me, and it does seem that going to a larger main may offer a better, less extreme setting. I'll get a look at the plugs when I get a chance, and try to make time to try the bigger jet.
