Jetting.......fun,fun,fun. 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Seems it never ends. After fiddling with this carb for I don't know how many times, I have re-installed the stock jetting. Seems to run good, with one GLARING exception. It now requires about a 5-7 minute warm-up before she will move! why? I'm running stock jetting, roadhouse 2/1 pipes, stock filter(pulled K&N) AIS removed, pms at 3 turns. Now when it warms up, it runs great. What gives? It's been chilly here (high 30's-mid 40's) when I leave for work, and I would love to resolve this problem.
So you know, if I try to leave when she's cold, it's like a free ride at the rodeo (and 8 seconds is about all I care to stand).

What!!!! No reply's. Is this thing on (tap, tap, tap) . One more thing, it has the Barons stock ported manifold on it at this time as well.
Don't think I don't appreciate your alls opinions, I have had to handle some things of late that have kept me off the keyboard (not the least of which was my wife getting rearended on her bike on her ride to work recently).

First, I hope your wife is OK. I'm sorry to hear that.

Are you leaving your choke all the way out during warm up? If you are try pushing it back in half way after it's ran for about 30 seconds and see if that helps.

Hope your wife if OK.

Sometimes posts are missed so good for you to bump it up.

Stock jetting ..... 182.5, stock needle, #35 pilot and PMS about 3?

Only change is the ported manifold?

Normally if the carb is lean the engine will take longer to warm up and it may 'hesitate' until it's hot. You may also experience less power when the engine gets hot.

On the other hand, if the carb is rich the engine should run good when cold; you may not even need full choke. When warm, the engine may run rough.

So .... this happens on the way to work when it's cold (around freezing) but it's OK on the way home? Need to use full choke to start the bike both in cold and warm temps? Dike won't start without the choke? Probably on the lean side.

Remember .... you may have stock jetting but you don't have a stock setup (ported manifold) so you going to have to do the trial-and-error route to get it set up properly. Yes the manifold does make a difference.

Give it time and it will come.

Since your back at basicly stock settings that sounds about right, took about that
long for my bike to warm up properly when cold. Plus I like my Roadhouse
pipes, but don`t think thier near as free flowing as some
you didn`t say,but did you also but the stock needle in?.That will lean you
way out

Post edited by: vegasdave, at: 2007/01/10 09:03

Re:Jetting.......fun,fun,fun. 5 Years, 4 Months ago
THANKFULLY, my wife is OK. She loves to ride as much as I do , so when her bike was totalled out, I parked mine for about a month so it didn't rub it in that she couldn't ride. It was near freezing the morning that she was stuck so she was covered up in about three layers (two of which where "safety" gear). She had also just released her clutch and started to pull away (left hand turn) when it happened , so the bike lowsided, and she walked away, just bruised and sore. Now she has a cherry 96 magna that I'm sure if she knew its ability, I'd never be able to keep up
Now back to less important things. Just before her accident, the weather started to cool round here and the R* started to act weird. I spoke with you guys bout that a couple months ago (herky/jerky- then random bogging). So I thought, why not try stock jetting,so I have. still have herky/jerky if it is not completely warmed up , but the random bogging seems to be gone. Now it just takes a juneflies lifetime to warm up! What gives?
Here's how the bike is NOW : Stock paper filter, stock jetting, roadhouse 2into1 pipe, ported manifold, AIS removed, PMS at 3 turns out. Does this combo sound lean, or rich? I'll probably get a chance to pull plugs this week-end. It would Seem as if the bike is running lean, hince the long warm-ups (?).
Also, I would like to try a Barons jet kit as it seems that many of you that have your carbs right where you want then are using barons. Seems like the DJ kit has me fiddling more than Charlie Daniels. Does baron sell thier kit stand-alone or do you have to buy a BAK or something of the like? Thanks again for the caring and the info. Dan

Sorry Doc, you asked some ?'s that I did not answer. It needs Full choke whenever I need to start it. Our temps here are high thirtys mornings , high fiftys to low sixtys afternoons. Full Choke required whenever. Then half choke for some time ( when I here it starting to load). Still runs poorly after 5 minutes of warm-up for a couple of miles (snap/pop/herky/jerky) until its road warm. Then it seems ok, though alittle "off" in the power dept compared to jetted version. Thoughts .

Glad your wife is OK. You can buy just the Barons jet kit by itself. But if your airbox is stock you don't need to jet even with a K&N in there. At least I didn't. Is it the motor that is jerking or the clutch because the oil is still mud from the cold? Just a thought to help add to the confusion.

Baron sells the jet kit by itself.

Couple of miles at freezing should be just about right for it to be warmed up. At those temps I'm about a minute at full choke and then 1/2 choke for a mile or two.

I suspect you may be rich on the top end but lean in the middle. When you give it normal throttle, you're primarily on the needle. The stock needle is fatter than the aftermarket ones and may be too lean for the ported manifold.

You could try turning up the PMS another half-turn but don't go beyone 3.5. That should help a bit until you get the jet kit.

Magna .... hope the wife enjoys the new bike. Almost bought an Magna in '87 .... loved those upswept pipes.

Just got off the phone with Barons, jet kit on the way so.... When it gets here I can bug you guys for set-up tips . Funny, the guy that I spoke with at barons asked what I needed,I explained that I was experiencing jetting woes since cooler weather set in with a DJ kit and before I could complete my sentence he said "yeah, thats a problem". He may be selling his product, but I'm hoping it resolves my issues. And I've used DJ products on many of my other bikes with no trouble, so I'm not product bashing either. Here's to hoping
I had a 97 magna 7 years ago when Wendy was still my co-pilot,and man those things would book. I too loved the upswept pipe 700-750 models of the mid 80's as well.Thanks,Dan.
