More Jetting Questions 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Gram,

First off, thanks for a great place to look up help. I took the advise you gave to someone else about his jetting and am getting close on mine (04 R*). I do have a question though. Here are some details.

04 R* Silverado
K & N Filter Kit (similar to BAK)
Stage 2 upgrade on ignition (Yamaha) (raised the redline to 5600 rpm)
Yamaha Long Drag pipes (Baffles)
AIS disconnected
170 Mikuni main jet
40 Mikuni pilot jet
needle set on 4th clip
PMS at 2.75
About 900' above sea level

There is no popping on decel and it accelerates really good. It just seems that on the WOT test (4th gear at 70) when I go full throttle it pulls ok, but seems like it could use more fuel. It also seems a little weak on hills in 5th gear. It will accelerate going uphill, but it seems to struggle a little.

If I move the clip to the 5th position, will that help at WOT or will it push it to the rich side on normal riding?

Will I need to change the PMS if I change the clip?

Thanks,
David

Welcome ot the Clinic David

Need to know three more things:

What needle (Baron's, Dyna)
Manifold ported or stock
Are the baffles still in your pipes

Let me know, but my gut take right now is that your main is too small. Have you done a WOT test to see if the main is too lean?

Gram,

Manifold is stock.
Baffles are in the pipes.
The needle is from Dynajet. Has 6clip positions.

Originally, when the dealer installed the pipes and everything, they used the Dyna 160 main and the stock 35 pilot jet. The plugs were extremely (to my way of thinking) light colored.

I would really recommend that you jump to the next jet size. Try a 172.5 mikuni, then go through the process of dialing in the PMS. Its important to go through the process to get it balanced with the other circuits in the carb.

Also, do a WOT test to verify that the new main is not too small. I have seen some 04s that needed 175s (mikuni) to get sufficient fuel for best operation.

Gram,

I do have a 175 that I bought when I picked up the 170.
Do you have the link or website or article about the WOT test?
Just want to make sure that I am doing it right.

Thanks for the help. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I just posted an article on the WOT test under the Articles/carbs-intake section David.

Gram,

Got everything put together and running. Took off with tools onboard and ran about 80 miles total. PMS is right at 3 turns. Still needs maybe an 1/8th more. Has a slight hesitation sometimes after slowing and getting back into the throttle. Otherwise, it runs great. Pulls harder than I ever imagined it would and the vibration dropped way down.

So eveyone will know the final specs:
175 Mikuni main
40 Mikuni pilot
Dynajet needle on 4th clip
ais removed
bafflles in pipes
K&N filter kit

Just wanted to let you know.

Thank you for allowing people to pull from the vast knowledge base you have.
I'll tip a cold one your way tonight.

Thanks David!!

But its not just mine. It belongs to all of us. It is compiled from the Road Star Riders forum, so they deserve the credit.

Sounds like you are nearly there. Great news.

Now you can enjoy what this ride is all about
