Congratulations, you are no longer a R* virgin. It won't be long before you are looking for excuses to take her apart again. It feels good to poke around and find the fix.

I just got my 2000 R* back from yamaha recall, never before, but now its backfiring from rear cylnder, changed the plugs, same thing. A friend said it sounds like one cylinder is running rich, but with just one carb I don't see how. checked for exhuast leak, but I cant't really tell. I called Dealership and informed them of my problem, but they won't be open until after the new year before I can bring it back. I will let you know how it turns out.

Its not un common for one cylinder to run richer than the other. You might run some seafoam through it for a couple of tanks and see if that helps any. YOu might have some carbon build up on the exhaust valves.

You might have an air leak at the manifold/head connection on that cylinder.

Could it be a vacuum leak at the intake on the rear cyl.? It's possible the mechanic didn't get the bolts tight or pulled the intake bolts up unevenly. You could try spraying a little carb cleaner around the flange. If it's leaking, the idle sound will change.

There is a vacumn line that connects to a fitting on the top front of the rear cylinder. The dealer might have left the locking clip off the hose. This will cause the line to pop off and display the symptoms you described. It happened to me when I got mine back from the trans recall dealer fix.

OK, I'll check that, I did spot a rubber hose line with some type of metal fitting on one end and a 90 degree bend on the other end that is tie-wrapped to some other hose near the center of the pistons. Neither end is connected, can't tell where it goes, may have always been their and didn't notice.
