Exhaust mod affect 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Hi, Doc or someone with similar modification,

Can you take a look at this exhaust baffle mod I did, similar to the one posted in the tech section for the HK big straights.

I siliconed in a tight fitting 1&7/8" SS sink strainer in the end-cap of some cobra speedster longs. I tested it out and it seems to run fine, even a little better on the low range. The sound is great, still loud when throttled up, but real mellow around town.

Do you see anything about this that could bad for the engine or affet the PMS? I'm not sure, just wondering if more backpressure and little less flow, would the PMS need to be turned in our out?

Thanks for your comments.

PS. more about this modification:

I did the baffle "sink strainer" mod on my Cobra Speedster Longs, sounds alolt better.
Still has that classic cobra sound but without the hard tone. Went to Home
Depot, got a couple of Danco snap-in sink strainers #80064 and a tube of
high-temp black silicone. Removed the chrome endcaps, set the strainers
inside the back end of the endcaps, three little prongs fit snugly inside
the endcap. Then take the silicone and put about a 3/8 bead of silicone
around the front and back edges of the strainer, making sure the endcap is
cleaned/sanded first. It costs about six bucks total. Let the silicone dry
real good, inside the house if its cold outside. Then simply re-install the
end caps and voila, an exhaust that you can take anywhere. I might take a
drill bit, one size larger, and ream the holes a little. Not sure yet, for
now it sounds good, haven't taken it out on a long ride yet. This is a
great set of pipes, performance, looks, and sound!

As long as it's hi-temp silicone then you should be OK. I've always used muffler cement when working with exhaust systems.

Worse thing that could happen is the car behind you gets a present.

As you restrict the exhaust gases you need to lean the motor out. I doubt that the strainer mod will require much more than a change in the PMS.

Try turning the stock PMS in about 1/4 turn at a time. Once it starts to pop/backfire on decel turn it back out 1/4 turn.

Doc and Bear, thanks for your comments. I did use High-temp silicone to put these in. I feel much better now about running the "bazooka" cheese graters

OK, update on the sink strainers. After riding on the highway, at very fast speeds, these sink strainers blew out. (Hope nothing / no one got hurt )I guess they were not in all that great. Next step, if your thinking of this type of mod, make sure they are secure, bolted or spot welded is best. (I tried friction, wedging the piece in place, and high time silicone, and it did not hold.)
