Oversized ?? 5 Years, 4 Months ago
Hi All,
I have been reading your post for a couple of weeks. I just bought a new 2007 Road Star Standard 1700 about a week and a half back. Of course it snowed the second day I had it, so it is sitting in the garage for now.

Anyway, I have been reading where everyone talks about 165 to 170 something jetting up for changes to their exhaust and air system. I still have stock exhaust, but have drilled it out to stage II. I took the carb and air box off today to open up the PMS and look at the air box for drilling.

While I had the carb off, I removed the float bowl and noticed my main was a 182.5 .
The bike runs really good as expected, a little lean until it warms up good then ok. I was just curious about the 182.5.

Any info you might have will be received with much gratitude.

Well, I see I didn't read enough jetting post. It appears that the 182.5 is the stock jet. Am I not understanding what I read or are the jet sizes reversed or am I just showing my ignorance.

Welcome to the clinic jvcexc

Actually people are jetting down in size when they put pipes and an airbox on. In the mikuni jets the number indicates the CC's of fuel per minute. Stock for a 1700 is 182.5. So going down to a 170 is less gas. The Roadies will run great set rich but they will also run run great leaned out with less problems and better mileage. I don't think with the stock jetting you are lean. They just take a while to wake up when it gets cold outside.

Welcome to the clinic and to "tinkerville". You are correct the 182.5 is a stock Mikuni jet for your R*. There are several kits out there and the numbers do not all relate to the same size. The real difference and why the numbers are smaller is that the needle used in, for example the Baron's kit, is smaller in diameter with more gradual taper.

Others with much more knowledge and experience will surely join in as this is one of the favorite topics.

If you have drilled the pipes, but done nothing else you should be OK, but may want to open the PMS a bit. That is a whole other story. Check the Tech Tips under carbuerator for more than you ever wanted to know.

To add fuel to the fire ..... ..... the size of the main jet for the stock setup depends on the year of the bike:

1600 ...... 165
1700 ...... 182.5

Both are Mikuni jets.

Thanks vegasdave, that worm can is caused by 7 inches of snow and a son with a HD nighttrain. Musky, that really helps me understand what I was looking at. Cruiserbob, I already did a 1/4 turn out when I drilled the plug out of the PMS. Of course I can't tell anything until I can get it out of the garage.

I'm thinking about doing the poor mans BAK trick to the plastic air box. By adding more air, will I have to go bigger or smaller on the main?

I only got 156 miles on this thing before the snow. Wanting to get it broke in before my Harley riding son and his Buds get their bikes out. would like to show them some real stock power when the time comes.

Are you going to buy a jet kit and change the stock needle out for the needle that comes with the kit?

I don't know yet Musky. I was just trying to find something to play around with until I can ride again. I suspect I will, but again, don't know yet.
