Jetting question for the powers that be?? 3 Years, 2 Months ago
|
|
Was looking at the Kuryakyn website about the jetting on a 1600 with the Hypercharger and the setting it gives for the main jet is a 205 main jet at 700 feet above sea level. My question is that large of a jet would work at that elevation due to density of air at that level, but I am at 3700ft above sea level so the combination of thinner air density and that size jet would cause her to run way rich right? In all your combined wisdome (those of you that read this) what would be a more likely jetting for my elevation. The bike is running Cobra Drags on it with no baffles and the Hypercharger Pro-Series. Don't know what size jets are in it now, just curious about educated opinions. Thanks Guys.

No matter what aftermarket aircleaner/pipe combo, we generally recommend a DJ setting of around 180. The other jets remain stock.
As you stated, incresing elevation means leaner carb setups so you may need a main lower than 180. You'll see when you do the WOT test.

like Doc said, the 180 is a good start, the 205 will run great til the bike gets all carboned up and you can't afford gas anymore, lol real poor fuel economy.
I have the 1700 and run a 185 DJ main and bike runs strong.. good fuel economy.

Kurakyn kits usually do not include a replacement needle for the carb. Its really futzed up, but they recommend those jets to get around the size of the stock needle. I have tried to jet a few Kurakyn kits using the stock needle and it is never great.

I just bought and installed a Kury High Five on my 04 and they included a Complete Jet kit and guidelines ...including a new Needle . BUT in the instructions for the 1600 they do not spec the needle change .

I think any of the jet kits is good as long as they come with a tapered needle that can be set to various positions, much easier to tune and a better mid range than the stock needle..
I always found my roadie to be kind of sluggish in the mid range before rejetting the carb.

Yes ... goes without saying ..... our recommendations are based on premise that you have an aftermarket needle.
If you have a stock needle then bets are off.

Pulled carb apart and the jet is showing 167.5 and the needle doesn't have any grooves but it does it have a shim in it.

Correction, the starter jet is showing the 67.5 and the main jet isn't showing any numbers at all??

You have a 1600 so it sounds like you have a mishmash of pieces.
Stock starter is 57.5 and the OEM main has markings so it sounds like someone changed out the starter and main but left the OEM needle.
If it's running OK then you can leave it alone .... begs the question .... "Why were you considering the 205?"
If you want to tweak it then I'd recommend getting a Mikuni or DJ complete jet kit which will have an aftermarket needle. I prefer the Baron jet kit which has Mikuni jets.
