Welcome to the Clinic Maddog!

I am hoping someone else will pop in here, but I don't have any jeting experience with the 42 mm.

Based on your symptoms, it sounds like it is too rich.

If it were a 40mm, I would suggest going after the PMS for sure, perhaps lowering the main but can't be sure without something to base it on.

If someone doesn't chime in here pretty soon, I will see if I can track Bulldog down and get him to chime in. He has a TON of experience with them.

Well, we need a basis to start with:

What main jet do you have now?
Pilot jet?
Needle setting?
What Dyna 3000 setting?
Have you done any plug checks at idle, mid range and WOT?

Give us some more detail and do a plug check, that is going to tell you tons.

If your plugs are white, you are lean not rich. When you did the plug check, did you do it after idle or at speed or WOT with an ignition cut and coast to a stop?

I am not real familiar with the 42, but a 160 just sounds small to me on a carb with that big a throat and a BAK. Pilot might be as well, but without the various plug checks it is hard to tell. Does your needle have multiple notches to adjust it as well?

thank,s I,ll do the plug check and get back. I said rich ment lean
frist tryed it with out air filter plugs were black.
I know you have to run air filter just put it on and fired it up.
then I ran it and they cleaned up. so I put new plug in and do the plug check.

Hey maddog,

it's me Bucardo ("inventor" of the VOES solution)

I need to check my notes, but it appears you have the stock Harley-anticipated jetting on your HSR. I'll check my notes and latest settings, but as I recall, your pilot is fat and you need a "96" needle (fatter). Main should be OK, but also may be a little fat (not a big deal).

On the VOES, did you modify it or just install a stock one. Remember the part#?
Was it installed per the photo, if not how?

Did you mean you're experiencing no carb cough, when the engine's warm and you crack the throttle?

Are you confident your vacuum connection is tight?

Do you have access to an EGA?

IMHO, bag the plug check, too many things work against a good plug read.

I'll try to read any response you may have tomorrow and grab my notes for my latest jet settings (which finally are working pretty good!)

Jim
