Maxair jetting 3 Years, 10 Months ago
Hey guys,

I know some of you here are using the Maxflo, and since I no longer have access to delphi (thanks to our IT guys!!!!), well I can't ask in the garage. I have followed the instructions that came with the Maxair kit. The only difference is that I have ported the manifold. I also have the Maxmix and is says to set between 7/8 and 1.5 turns.

The first time I started the bike, it would not idle on its own with the choke on. After a few minutes, I pushed the choke back in, and by increasing the idling, I could let go of the throttle. I didn't have much time to fiddle around with it as it was minus 40 degrees outside. I did go back a few weeks later and tried to adjust the PMS, but same results. The bike fires right up, but I have to keep on the throttle.

I won't have time to work on the bike this weekend, but maybe in a week or so. Any suggestions of where I should start? Could it be the manifold doesn't seal right? Idle set too low? Wrong jetting with the ported manifold? I also just put on HK Xccelerators (which sound AMAZING!)

Thanks
R

Check for a good seal on the manifold, but probablymore likely a vacuum hose that might have been knocked off or come loose? Particularly since you had the manifold off.

Thanks Crash. Where should I start looking? How many of those vaccuum hoses are there? Where to go to and from?

Check your manifold seal, then on the manifold there is a vacuum nipple, make sure the hose is either connected or the plug is capped off (did you remove your AIS?) You had your carb off, did you reconnect the TPS electrical plug? You had the carb open, when you replaced the needle, did you make sure the diaphram was not pinched or out of the groove?

Trying to think of any other potential areas .. but look at those first. If you have the kit set up like the intructions, it should run like a bat out of hell. IF it has an issue idling even when warm, there is somethign amiss.

Thanks Crash,

I only got your message this morning, but look at it a bit last night. The hose that went to the AIS is hooked up to the manifold, but there is still a screw at the other end from when I removed the AIS.

I noticed yesterday that the idle screw was set extremely low, so I raise it a little...Actually, I had to raise it a lot so the bike wouldn't die. It fired up without choke (but throttle up). When I let it die, it fired right back up again with choke. I raised the idle up a bit again and was able to let the bike warm up, but still with a pretty high idle. If I added choke, it would die right away. After it warmed up, I played with the PMS a little and managed to find a spot where it wouldn't miss or pop when I got on the throttle. At this point, I also burn a little patch (size of a dime) in my forehead by gently pressing it on the front head pipe!!!! IDIOT!!! That felt nice under my hockey helmet later on! Whenever I gave it a shot of throttle, I could see a bit of black smoke coming out of the pipes.

I'll remove the carb and manifold next weekend and will check for the other things you suggested.

Thanks,
R

Do I need to come over and slap you silly?

If you need help I can drop over and lend a hand but remember once it warms up you'll have to tweak it again ...... unless you're the one with the BIG warm garage

Woa there big fella, you're not my type!

Yes, that would be me. It was 15 degrees Celsius in there the last 2 days we worked on the bikes. The guys are coming over again next weekend so we can do a few more things like relocating the fuel pump, rear puley, extended dogbones, etc. And we also have my buddy's old Wing apart in there. If you would like to come out, you're more than welcome. Or if you prefer, we can try a few more things and if I don't feel it runs right, we could call you in specifically to fine tune the carb/intake, etc. another day. I will be having another "garage day" in a few weeks to finish up all the little things and to put the spring back on.

I'm off next week, and it's a little complicated to get on here from home (dial up) but I will be checking my emails. If you need to reach me, try lafleurr@inac.gc.ca

Thanks,
R

Permit me to comment, by keeping the throttle open or raising idle your drawing gas from the mid circuit , to idle an engine has to feed from the pilot circuit, that being said I read you have installed a Maxmix pms that would be the first part I would check, your not getting enough gas or simply sucking air around the manifold or carb which prevents idling .
You may want to use a hi-temp gasket sealant on the exterior surface of the intake manifold at the cyl mating surface not directly on the NEW o-rings, because of the heat expansion cycles between the cylinders you need a flexible product. Block off the nipple on the intake manifold.

A ported manifold has minimal effect on jetting, it will richen up the mix slightly but not enough to warrant any jetting changes other than a pms adjustment.
If ever you need assistance I am in Gatineau.
thanks

Re:Maxair jetting 3 Years, 9 Months ago
Thanks for the help guys. We discovered that there was a leak around the manifold by spraying brake cleaner around it. The idle speed would change. I changed the o-rings and re-installed the manifold. There was a leak with the old ones and the new ones. So we took it apart again and applied a little hi-temp gasket sealant, let it cure for a day and the leak seems to be gone. The only problem now is that once I let go of the throttle, the revs don't come back down to regular idle speed right away.

Oh yeah, and once it's running, I can't give it more than 1/4 choke or it dies.

Suggestions?

Thanks

Sounds like junk in the carb or your pilot is not setup right, remove, clean the carb with compressed air and ensure you have all the jettings right, re-install the Maxair, ...
