Exciting update!! 5 Years, 3 Months ago
Well, at least for me. Some people are put on this earth to learn from, guess I'm one of them. What you read here may cause you to shake your heads and yell at your monitors, but here goes.
Bike has not run like I felt it should in sometime. To keep from wasting too much time on the details read post "need help quick" , them come back. Anyway, I ended up putting the stock jetting back in. After verifying I had no vaccum leaks, I went to the auto parts store and got "deep creep" per Muskys suggestion, as I am already a seafoam fan, and after reading the link from RSR forum in "need help quickly" post, I thought , what could it hurt. I'll admit I was alittle skeptical that my valves could be carboned up already.
I've used seafoam products in the past, so i know the drill. After getting her up to Temp (air box was off), I sprayed the deep creep straight on in the carb with alittle rev(to keep her from stalling), till she was good and loaded up. Let her sit awhile, fired her up, typical seafoam (batman) smokescreen, and she sounded great. So guess what, I treated her again for good measure.
Now , I also dropped the recommended amount in the fuel tank of the canned seafoam (5 oz for a full tank) , and road her like she was rental car down into Atl. for the International bike show.
Here are the results; 1. She has not stumbled at all since the treatment, not at all (Hallelujah). That is from dead cold starts on multiple starts since saturday morning. 2.Power is Fantastic (this is where some of you will throw eggs at me) I'm running the stock box drilled with the K&N filter, ported manifold, STOCK JETTING (pms at 3) be fair, I had never tried this set-up because I had read that once you modified the box, with K&N , installed, jetting was required. Try it first. 3. Gas mileage is back!! Been riding her on the "hard" side (not over the top,but...) and I rode 145 miles in the last two days, and still have alittle less than a quarter of a tank left. This has been with the W/S off I'll add.
So, was I dealing with SVS? Kind of sounds like it. But hey, I'm happy, and I'll keep the forum posted as to any changes. I'll also be doing regular "deep creep" services to my girl to keep her health up. Also changed the oil and only put in 4 quarts instead of manual recommended 4.3 quarts. Anything to help.
Sorry, I know this is kind of long, but the details might help someone else.BB

I've always been a fan of running your roadstar to lean... I set mine up with a speedstar K&N filter & cover... with stock jetting... got symptoms of lean... I slowly jetted toward rich just until my symptoms went away... now that you're set up correctly... you need to watch the really hot days... running a bit toward lean will make your bike run hotter... if your gonna stop for just a minute or five... leave it running or you won't be able to restart it... watch for carb puking.. the carb is so close to the front cylinder that it will boil the fuel in the carb bowl and because our bikes don't have an overflow it pukes it out on the hot pipes and your right leg and if you try to restart it she may back fire and ignite you and your bike... don't ask how I know... you'll learn to turn off the fuel before you shut down and to start the bike before you turn it on... I'd suggest using synth oil (better heat tolerance) and I might even suggest a oil cooler - nothing expensive just a cooling fin wrap for the oil filter ($25) I don't have one.. but I live up north.... ~guido

Hey BB

Glad to hear it's not giving you anymore grief. When you say you went back to "Stock jetting" do you mean you went back to the stock jet(s) and needle? Did you change the jetting at the same time you did the Deep creep or did you try it first with just the Deep creep treatment.

Glad it helped you Bear. I am curious, you say in the "need help quick" thread you only have 3000 miles, do you/did you lug the engine? How much oil did you put in at your last oil change? Just trying to get some clue as to why this would happen so soon.

Oh yeah, even though I have a Midnight Star, I think that Red is the most awesome color out there.

Post edited by: RoadieFF, at: 2007/02/26 06:28

I'll try and cover a few pointers. Yes , it is stock jetting, changed back at the same time I did the deep creep treatments. I also changed to a fully synthetic 10w/40 m/c oil this weekend as well. And yes, the last time I changed it, I followed the manuals recommendation and was running 4.3 quarts of oil. Not any more! And no , I don't lug it, never have , never will (besides,my friends won't let me ) . I have more thoughts, but I'm at work ,and they actually want me to do something,so.............................................BB

PS, this morning it was about 45 degrees, and she didn't so much as hiccup

Is the Seafoam shock treatment half a can or a whole can per tank? I've seen it written both ways... Just picked up FOUR and only FOUR quarts of Mobil 1 V-Twin and a new K&N oil filter the other day. As soon as my bike has enough parts on it to run again, AND the weather cooperates, I wanna Seafoam it, run the piss out of it, change out the oil and start the riding season fresh!

Hey...

I think I just had an epiphany...no wonder bikes get named after women...I think I just described douching my bike.

Yes.

I've did it both ways before. Whole can didn't hurt anything. 1/2 can worked just as good as far as I can tell though.

Not disputing Musky on this, but I just followed the directions on the can (1oz per gallon, so, I used 5oz's). BUT, I had just done the shock treatment right through the carb, so maybe a heavier dose in the tank was not as nessesary.

While we're on the subject, how often do you guys that "treat" your bikes do it? Every tankful, every 3rd tankful, etc.
And on the more intense treatment through the carb, how often are you doing that? Musky, Doc, I know both of you do this, but at what rate? Thanks,BB.
