Need a starting point 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Hello all new to the forum and to the roadie. I recently purchased a 01 1600 the previouse owner has installed v&H longshot pipes and had the high compression pistons installed when the recall was done. the dealer installed a jet kit and i think he removed the baffles. it has a thunder mfg teardrop breather on it. thats pretty much all i know thats been done to it. he is my problems pinging on accel which i purchased a dyno 3000 hoping it will fix that, havent installed yet. it is also popping bad on decel sounds like im making popcorn. there is also alot of noise coming from the engine which i think is normal from what i have been reading, was going to change the oil and use the syn oil and larger filter to see if that helps. I know the previous owner and trust that he didnt rip me off. I just need to know were to start with the jetting to get the popping to stop and hopefully increase the performance thanks for the help love my Roadie just stepped up from 750 shadow to this and other than the few problems it rides great

If its got HI compression pistons need hi-octane gas..
the Dyna3000 may help with the pinging as well... I think one of the retard settings cures pre-detination.

to tell if the baffles have been removed V&H has a bolt that comes out to remove (see if its in the pipe)(you will have to look up V&H baffle installation) them not much of a baffle anyway.. you can run a handle up through the exhaust anyway.

Does your bike still have the AIS system on it? that will cause some decel popping.
some popping is kind of normal just not a lot...

Adjust the PMS mixture screw out 1/4 turn that might ease some of the popping. (assuming stock carb and not the HSR 42 or 45, I hear they are different adjustment).

and Yes one of the v-twin syn oils 20/50 will quite down the noises from the valve train.

let us know how things go and

I wouldn't be surprised, but check to see if the Speedstar cdi is in the bike...
it shocks me to think about it that they put in the pistons and didn't do that...
because I think 1600's need a lot more work to put in Hi-Comp pistons but leave it to the dealer to only go half way..

The Ais has been removed as well as the baffles. I just got the dyno 3000 yesterday and i was planning on installing it tonight. figured id change the oil when i installed it and then start on the mixture settings Talked to the orginal owner a few mins ago and he said he changed the main jet after the pistons were installed said he went up a size but cant remember what it was and that he moved the clip down on the needle. guess i need to start from scratch I have the old jets should install the orginal ones or the biggest ones in the kit? and were should i start with the needle setting?

I don't know the exact recommended jet for the 1600 with Hi-comp pistons but if it runs good..
just do the WOT test.. I am thinking you only need to adjust the PMS to get it dialed in.
between that and the Dyna3000 you should have it running perfect.

Your Dyna 3000 kit comes with a code book for the switch settings. If it has had the Hi-Comp piston swap, you'll want to use the "B" switch code series. Not the "A" series with is the standard piston setup.

Hey guys went out to put the dyna in and found out that it already had one lol knew I should have checked first but it was set on the "A" settings I changed it to to the "B" seems better no more pinging but I may need to adjust it more. If its not to much trouble that would be great Ultrastar if you dont mind. I still have the popcorn machine when I decel havent had a chance to do the WOT yet hope to try that tomorrow I am thinkin I'll need to start from scratch with the carb adjustment at least there is only one carb on this unlike my honda had 2 on that to adjust that can be a pain. well thanks for help so far guys I'll keep you posted
