Fuel economy after jetting 3 Years ago
When I had the bike repaired after getting rear ended I asked the dealer to install VH long shots and he reccomended jetting the carb stating the factory builds them to run too lean. I said ok . Before the jets I was getting average 40 to 45 mpg now its 20 at best. Called the dealer and the service manager said they used a DYNA jet kit. I asked what size jets were used and he never documented the repair order with the size. The bike has more get up and go but what a sacrifice.
My question is will the bike run with factory jets and am exhaust. I read here that it will but would like to hear from those who do. Also what size jets are standard on 05 RS . My drivig area is about 250 ft above sea level and occasionally will exceed 1000 on trips to NY.

Thanks

JR,

It's really worth your effort to buy another kit, and do it yourself according to the instructions with it. The dealer isn't going to help you now... they already blew it, and don't even know what they put in there. (What's the chance you can get the rest of that kit and the instructions from them?)

You'll learn your bike... know what's in there, and it'll get that mpg that it should.

I got a kit off of eBay 2 years ago for $27. Followed the directions, and it runs just great, and my mpg is always in the 40s. It's a little spooky at first, but focus and patience will get you through... plus, we're all here!

If you still have the stock air box the jetting didn't need to be touched.

Jersey -

I'm sorry you're going through this, but Questcap and Doc are sending you in the right direction. Musky's correct that you could have stayed stock, but now that you're this far I think you might want to follow through with getting it running properly and then if you decide to throw a better filter on it you're all set to make some small changes and she'll be running great. If you haven't pulled the tank from your roadie you'll have to do that for the first time, but it's not hard, just go slow and methodical and don't scratch anything. Once off, you'll see that the roadie is pretty easy to work on. I really enjoy working on this bike, actually, and I've worked on A LOT of bikes!

I'm sooooo happy to be free of the dealer. My bike has never seen the dealer, and I plan on this never happening! The fact that they didn't give you all the jets in the jet kit is like crime. They should either give you the jets or buy you a new kit, IMO.

But really, it's just one carb and you have all of us here to help, and once you've done it you're free! (from dealer)

One suggestion: get an adjustable PMS like Baron's. It's so worth it for fine tuning your ride. After doing my filter and re jet, my mpg was in the mid 30's; now, with careful tweaking, I'm back above 40 mpg in mixed, and pretty spirited, riding.

Good luck with however you go, but for sure you can get that mpg back and have her running sweet.

I know how you fell , as I also get 20 miles per gallon , that sure sucks , I have a adapted car air filter (from autozone) and have open pipes on my ride , I bought the Vance and Hines jetkit from eBay and they just re-rejetted my bike and still the same issue , I can not hit over 100 miles per gas tank (city miles , as I have been out on the highways and I have gotten more than 160 miles from one tank) I really do want to get more mileage but I am the stupidest person when it comes to working on bikes

Hey, Loko,
Do you feel like tackling it, I'm sure we could talk you through taking it down to see what your current setup is and then go from there. It sure sounds like it is set-up way wrong.
Or you could ride to Mississippi and I'll be happy to do it.

In discussing further with my dealer, they have agreed to re jet with factory jets to specs at no charge. Making an appointment today. I figure I would give them another shot. They did do a real nice job on the wreck work end of the fix.
Deptford Honda Yamaha here in New Jersey so far has been accomadating.
I'll let you all know when I get her back.
