Well seems I just can't stay out of the carb. I went to a 170 main from 172.5 clip on the 3rd slot on Baron's needle and changed the pilot to a 37 from the 35. My back plugs were sooty, the idle is much better now and the needle is no longer to far but is at 3 1/4 I still have a 40 pilot if I need it. Took a test run and it sputter at steady throttle at around 2000 rpm and some times a little lower. Throttle responce is great up to the rev limiter. Correct me if I am wrong but I think I need to drop the needle to the 4th slot. I'm gettin to good at this carb stuff I can do it in my sleep now.

Post edited by: Curt, at: 2007/03/11 16:37

You more than likely didn't have to change your pilot jet. You should try the needle at 4th clip. I think if it were me, I would go back to the pilot jet, stay with the 170main, and go 4th clip. But I guess it all depends on where you are at. I forgot where you are. Your PMS of course should be adjusted accordingly. sounds to me that you may be getting too much gas. Do you have an aftermarket ignition?

Hey Curt

Didn't blow you off. Had to leave as soon as I posted last time. Sounds like you got it fixed. What is your PMS at now?

Haven't checked it yet she was to hot and it is raining now so I won't get to ride for about two days. I will check it and let you know. I figured the 37 pilot would fix the lean idle problem now she idles nice. Wasn't to sure about the 170 main but figured if you and Doc could pull it off I could too. Now maybe my gas milage will go back up to around 45mpg I was getting 30.

Looks like you figured it out.

As you guessed, if it sputters at 2000 then it's the most likely the needle. The needle controls most of the flow at midrange so depending on whether it performs better cold or hot depends on whether you raise or lower the clip.

Usually 3 is a bit too lean so going to 4 is a good bet.

Around the rev limiter or WOT you're on the main.

I's say the 40 is way too rich and that might be why your plugs are still sooty. Now that you've richened up the midrange you could probably move down on the pilot.

Remember .... one change at a time.

I put in the 37 pilot because I knew the idle was to lean from the dyno run. I figured moving from the 35 to the 37 on the pilot would richen everything up a little so I went to the 170 main to get better milage and all that was left was to figure out where I needed to be on the needle. Got it smack dab on now with the needle on the 4th. Kinda proud of myself HE HE! PMS is now 3 turns out like it should be and it won't fall out any more.
