05 Rejet 3 Years, 9 Months ago
Hello everyone - I'm new to the forum - and I already have a question. Bought my first Road Star and have knocked out 1000 miles on it. I have put a set of Hard Krome 3" Double D's on it and did a Dynojet Stage One rejet on it to accomodate the new pipes and the stock air box. Not looking to make any other changes. Since the rejet, the bike runs good and sounds great - but the gas mileage sucks! Getting 30 mpg with a tail wind. Heavy carbon inside the pipes at the rear. Convinced I'm much richer than I need to be and plan to make adjustments soon. Looking for suggestions. Have installed the Dynojet Stage One setup: 175 Main, 37 pilot, needle on 4 clip from the top, PMS three turns out, AIS plugged. Looking to improve MPG to 40 plus. That seems to be what it shoud get.

First thought: Drop the needle to the third clip and give it a try.

Second thought: Drop the needle to the third clip and put the stock 35 pilot back in, leaving the 175 Dynojet main. Adjust PMS as needed.

Third thought: Put the stock jets (35 pilot, 182.5 main) and stock needle back in, but slim the stock needle up one washer. Anyone know what the stock PMS is? Forgot to make note of it before making the DynoJet adjustment (3 turns out).

What do think? Oh yeah, Houston, Texas - almost sea level. Thanks for your help!

Great question, because I need to know the answer, too. I also have an '05 with V&H Longshots, stock air box, and getting 30mpg (without hotrodding). My dealer rejetted when I bought it, so I don't know what's in it. elevation: 1,300 ft

runs good, but plugs are solid black

If I'm understanding you right, you are still running the stock airbox. You probably could have gotten around rejetting it. I'd say that the stock airbox is killing you. I'm running a dynojet needle and Mikuni 175 which is much larger than your DJ175. Also running the DJ37.5 pilot. Running Shogun Slashers and a Ness Big Sucker. I get low 40s in mpg. BTW, mine's an 04.

If you don't want to change the airbox, probably best thing to do is go back with your stock jets and needle. If you do go to aftermarket breather, you'll probably have to come up a bit on the main jet.

I have a 2004 with the same pipes and jet kit. I've had some of the same situations such as lower gas mileage and carbon on pipe ends and have tried everything, but here is what I have so far (Dynojet kit,37 pilot,175 main, clip at third groove with a shim so its in between third and fourth groove and 2 to 2.5 turns on pms)third groove seems to have some hesitation. I get about 37 mpg all around,a little better on the highway. Next thing I want to do is to add an after market air filter. One thing that I have found is these bikes are tempermental and it takes several tries to get it right sometimes, but I don't think your to far off with your settings. Another thing is the plugs were really black with only about 600 miles on them.I went with autolites and use a little Yamaha Ring Free or Sea Foam in every tank of gas and that seems to help.
Good Luck, Let me know if this helps.

Post edited by: ROADHARD, at: 2005/04/04 00:16

Thanks for your input. You were correct. Right now I have only added the pipes and I am running the stock air box and filter. I have understood that even when changing the pipes you should/must rejet a little to accomodate the free flowing pipes. I'm looking for a slight jet increase from stock right now. I believe you may be correct in suggesting I go back to stock, but I would shim the stock needle up one washer. Do you think that sounds like a workable solution?

Thanks. I guess it is just not me. I have had three different bikes I have set up the the carb on. This is my first Yamaha and it is a little stubborn. But I will find a solution to regain the MPG. Just need the right combination. Have picked up some very good tips already.

Sounds like a good suggestion. Rather than go straight to dropping the needle to the third clip, I'll set it up at 3.5 and turn the PMS down to 2.5 rather than the full three. It appears you already tried the third clip on the needle without success. Will probably look into a air kit also and rejet again later. Just want to get the MPG back up right now. Thanks for sharing your experience.

IMO, I'd put it back stock, tweak the PMS and save the jetkit till you get an airkit. Just trying to help.

Thanks for the tip. Will be looking into an air kit. For now though, I got it worked out. Dropped the needle to third clip yesterday and turned the PMS in from 3 to 2.75. Seems to have solved all the problems. Bike runs great. Will check the MPG this weekend but no doubt it will have improved significantly.
