Joker,
These guys are right. I used to be very paranoid of carb work. (Like you, I could get it apart but putting it back together was another thing!!) But with the help of the guys here at RSC and after reading some of the Tech Tip articles and gaining a much better understanding of how these carburetors work, I got over that fear.

My advise is to take an hour or two, read through some of the tech tips regarding carbs and tuning, then jump in. If you get stuck or run into any problems you can always come back here and someone will be able to get you back on track. The main thing though is to get an understanding of how these carbs work; the different circuits, how they work, what they do and finally, how to tune each one.

Good Luck!!!

And remember; There is no such thing as a stupid question......

In The Wind,
Aaron

.... but I do have some stupid answers.

Go for it joker .... you're not the first to be hesitant on tearing it apart. Once the carb if off the bike, find a clean open area and you should be OK ... especially when you start dropping all the small parts.

I used to rebuild transmissions. I got a tip from an old german guy when I was stationed in Germany. His tip was to get a piece of corrigated roofing you know the rippled one. Cut four pieces and place the part your working on in the middle (or at least reference it like that). As you take the componant apart place the pieces in line down the valleys of the roofing so that way on installition time you still have the exact order in which it goes back togather. This tip works for carbs , tranny valve bodies(how I learned it) and many other things that have multiple parts. Hope this takes a little of the anxiety out for some.

Well I'll be darn.

I alway lay the parts down and they roll all over the place.

I've recently started to use egg crates for those disassemblies that have small parts.

Joker, they're right. It's a lot easier than you might think. You can do it. Just go one step at a time and do one thing at a time. Especially when you get the carb on the bench and you'll do fine.

A couple of tips for you. I don't remember the size of them, (somebody chime in here) but I suggest you buy four allen head screws to replace the little phillips head screws that are on the bowl on the bottom of the carb before you start. Second, I also recommend replacing the phillips head screw that holds the stock air box onto the manifold with an allen head as well. Those replacements will make adjustments and cleaning way easier from now on with a lot less agravation. Especially the ones on the carb.

Just my .02. Ratl.

That all sound right on the money ...if I may add just a couple things ... never stick anything into orifices (clean with carb cleaner) and be carefull not to knock your float out of adjustment.

Good for you. I clean mildly dirty carbs (your case , as it will run..) with Air. Me and my compressor have cleaned quite a few carbs together. Just use an air nozzle with a rubber tip. BB
