Yes. Technically a smaller jet will use less gas, maybe. But that won't get your bike tuned right. And since the circuits in the carb overlap if you have one wrong the others will be off and you will end up trying to jet around your mistakes. Read through the carb section of the tech articles.

Re:Jetting 2 Years, 8 Months ago
As you can tell I am a rookie at this but the fellow that was doing the work is quite experienced. It just seems confusing to read that the prefered jet for my setup is a 180 and the 170 that I had in was rich. As far as performance it feels great. I was running at 70 with my throttle locked and it barely slowed down climbing moderate inclines. Do I leave well enough alone or keep tweeking. that is the $64,000 question. I will re-read the tech articles now that I can atleast identify the parts.
Thanks for all of your help and patience.

What was it doing that made you think the 170 Dyna jet was rich? Thats a pretty lean main jet.

I am trying to increase my fuel mileage, When I read about everyone running 45 mpg+ and I am cruising at 32 - 38 mpg I thought I would try and imitate them. As I said increasing my air flow with a poor mans BAK helped. A friend of mine has a 00 roadie and he had a similar situation with fuel economy until he put a real BAK on and his mileage jumped to 50+ mpg. I would entertain any suggestions. I am leaving next week on a long ride and don't have time to order and insall a genuine BAK.

Here's the basic jetting how to. Jetting. You need to go in to jetting with the understanding that the bike is going to tell you what it needs. It might not be as lean as you want to go and you may not get the same mpg as someone else.

I had your document in hand when we were working last night. I just finished reading the Tech Tip on carbs. I think we will try a little more tweeking. His article actually said too lean of a mix will decrease mileage. We leaned it out from where it was, I wonder if we neeed to open it up a bit. I also wonder if I need to trim my choke knob housing. I have no problem starting my cold bike with little choke and it is ready to go in a few seconds. Too rich??

You don't trim the choke knob housing. You trim the knob itself. Just want to make that clear so you don't end up cutting the wrong stuff.

OK. Stop fixating on lean, and no more wondering about the jetting. Just follow the procedure step by step the way it says to do it. It will more than likely take going back into the carb more than once. But you need to make the changes based on what the bike says. And don't stress if your mileage doesn't match what others say. For one thing some people don't base their estimates on actual gas used. Some base it on just one tank of gas. And some base it on just one ride. Everyone rides differently. Everyone rides under different conditions. Get your bike set to where it's happy and don't worry over a few mpgs. Riding is too much fun for that kinda stuff. You can do it. Be patient and don't rush it. It will all turn out fine.
