It's my understanding that the AIS (Air Injection System) puffs air into the exhaust. With after-market pipes (lesser/no baffles), the popping / backfiring sound is more pronounced.

I have assumed that the final burning of spent fuel vapor was the reasoning behind it. The additional oxygen inserted into the pipe facilitates that process.

Every place on the Internet state performance gains by removing the AIS. Why? Only 2008-2009 have 02 sensors at that point.

I could be way off, though...
