We seem to be mixing litres and gallons. So that's 3.96 gallons (15 litres x 0.264172052) after traveling 186 miles (300 klm x 0.621371192). That actually equals 47 mpg, according to my calculations (still very decent and explains why the low fuel light hadn't come on yet, but it was close). If I'm wrong, please let me know.

20 litre tank does equal 5.3 gal

I can't seem to get anywhere close to 40 mpg. I'm thinking of having 20 pounds shaved off my right hand. Maybe that'll fix it. What octane are you using? I'm using 89. I was using 92-93 and I got about 1-2 mpg better by switching. Should I try 87? Is that the secret. Any fuel additives? Are you tucking under the windshield and using one of those tour de france helmets? UHG! I'm so jealous! My best is 35-36mpg. Are you guys using imperial mpg's or US standard mpg's?

300 km with 15 L = 47 mpg

You'll have to cut him some slack .... he's Canadian.

The converter shows 47 mpg IMP gallons or 57 mpg US gallons...
I guess there is a difference between Canadian and US gallons?
