Mysterious fuel problem 3 Years, 7 Months ago
My name is Tom and I have an 02 Midnight Silverado. I bought it six months ago and have had no problems so far. I live about 1/2 hour south of Minneapolis.

I'm having a little bit of a problem with my bike. It unexpectadly stopped running past idle. I've ridden multiple times (about 700-800 total miles) so far this year with no issues/concerns.

On May 12th I brought the bike out of the garage for a quick wash in between rain storms. I was careful to not use excessive hose water so that my air filter (K&N) didn't get soaked, however, I didn't cover it up. When the wash was done I pushed the bike back into its parking spot.

Fast forward 7 days later (May 17th) and I have an hour or two in-between rain storm to go for a ride. Bike starts great and idles fine. I allow bike to warm up for approx 2-3 minutes. With choke on or off its idling great. I go to ride out of garage and any throttle amount over idle and the bike will die. I restarted and killed it several times. I can't figure it out.

What I've done so far: Checked air cleaner, checked all lines running to/from carb for leaks, removed top of carb and checked diaphram, checked needle to make sure it was secure, made sure slide was free moving. Past this point I need some advise.

I'm second owner and previous had bike piped/jetted at dealer. I have no idea where to go from here. I ordered a service manual about 5 days ago (before the problem started) but haven't received it yet. I would probably be considered a weekend mechanic at my skill level. I'm definetely not at a level where I could tear a motor apart but I'm not afraid of carb work.

Can somebody please help me? The riding season is so short in Minnesota that I don't want to waste anytime with screwing around with a service shop. I tried reading as many forum subjects as possible but didn't see anything related to this subject. If I'm repeating somebody elses problem I apologize. Maybe somebody can steer me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be given.

Tom

I read your post ealier today, but wanted to think about this for a little while Tom.

It sounds like you are having some trouble with the primary fuel passages in the carb, potentially due to length of time the bike was put up for.

I would really recommend that you go the auto parts store and get some spray on carb cleaner. It should come with a straw just like WD-40 would.

It sounds like your pilot circuit is ok (idle) so I am concentrating on the main fuel circuit.

Remove your air kit (carb exposed) and start your bike up, in nuetral, on the sidestand.

Start by trying to rev it up real slowely and watching the needle base in the throat of the carb. You want to see a stream of fuel droplets coming out of the base as you rev it up. Use what you observe as a baseline to compare to as you do the following things:

There is an air bleed for the primary fuel circuit dead center bottom of the front of the carb throat. It will be a tiny hole with no air bleed screw in it (the one with the air bleed screw is for the pilot circuit). Start by running that straw all the way into that air bleed hole and giving it a good saturating spray as you pull the straw out of the hole. Do this with the bike idling on the sidestand, then try revving it up a few times.

Next try squirting the carb cleaner directly into the needle base. Again, try to rev it up slowely after doing this.

Both of these steps are attempting to clean hardened shellac (from storing it with fuel in it) out of the main's fuel path.

Next, try to maintain any rpm above idle, and occaisionally spray the carb cleaner directly into the carb throat. If this is going to do much at all, you will notice it within just a few good sprays. Try spraying toward the bottom of the throat, and just in front of the butterfly valve.

If these don't work, you are most likely going to need to tear into the carb and really clean it our good. Unfortunately, that will mean removing and dissasembling the carb.

I'll give that a try this weekend. Thank you very much for the quick response. Nobody likes losing valuable riding time!
