Cough 2 Years, 8 Months ago
What causes the cough when I take off from a stop sometimes? I have V&H longshots and Mr. Cancilla's air kit. Dynojet 4th clip, adjust PMS based on decel pops as per tech article. Sometimes I take off from a stop and it coughs a bit through the carb, sucks in a turn!

I feel your pain, I have a 04 and it does the same thing when it is good and warm and I have to sit at a light and idle for a bit, sometimes when I take off it coughs big time, so what I do is just bring it up off idle and then it does not do it, if you blip it standby foor mega-cough.
I think it is because I have my idle so slow cause it sounds good to me is probably partly to blame for mine coughing.

Yea too low an idle thing IMHO But I like mine low so i just make sure i blip it and get it up before a takeoff so it's smooth through the corner or turn or pull out. If I set my idle where it should be, it don't do it. But it sounds like it's sucking gas so fast it will implode the tank, so i like it set down to a lope. I know it's wrong but that's what I like.

get that idle up where it should be at around 800rpm!

you might like the sound, but below 600rpm your oil pressure is low and if itīs idling (and getting hot) with low pressure you will do damage.

it ainīt a harley, although the `authenticī harley sound is also produced on harleys by setting the idle too low (the big twins from `84 to `88 should be set at around 900rpm, `89 -`99 at 1000rpm, sportsters at around 950rpm), and they get bog all pressure at low revs.

when iīm servicing harleys, iīll set the idle to the correct rpm. quite often a client will complain itīs too high, iīll explain why i set it where it is, and more often than not next time i see the bike one of their `freindsī will have re-set it to around 4-500rpm.

Well I guess you guys called it, I too am guilty of running a real low idle. It's sounds sooo good. Also, my buddy with a VTX1800 honda hates it because of his fuel injection..he can't get that sound, lol. I think I'm gonna stick with it though, I don't spend too nmuch time sitting still

Good point, I'll bring it up at my next committee meeting while I'm on the way to Vegas and no one to talk to but myself.

Well, just to see if the idle was indeed the issue, I turned it up. Had to tweek my PMS to get her right again. It still does the cough. Not just from a stop either, sometimes when I am upshifting,.
