Almost there... 5 Years, 1 Month ago  
Spent a little time in the garage today to do the last of the last of the last thing...for now. You all know how THAT goes.

Anyway, I tried the DJ 170 main jet since I just ported the manifold AND I'm at 5600 ft. elevation, so I thought I needed to lean it out a bit. Seemed a little too lean, and I'd rather err on the side of richness, so I put the DJ 175 back in.

Here are the settings I have now:

-Ported manifold
-HK 3" pipes
-Speedstar air cleaner
-Speedstar ignition module (if that matters)

-DJ 175 main
-DJ needle at 3.5 (from the blunt end down- washer, circlip on 3, white spacer, 2 silver washers)
-stock pilot
-PMS at 2.75
-Accel duration all the way down with nut flipped to reverse side

All the following was done in the garage, not riding:
-Needs the choke to start (40 degrees here now), and starts like a champ with it on.
-Once started and choke off--hesitation/stumbling when I throttle; popping and backfiring (from the pipes, not the carb).
-Turn choke back on--smooth throttle, no hesitation at all.

I read through a bunch of posts, and I guess I'm looking for verification of my conclusion. I think I'm a bit lean and need to turn the PMS out a bit (1/4 turn at a time) until stumbling/popping/backfiring goes away. Then road test. When it's not flurrying.

I would have finished it off right then and just tried it...but I got called in to babysit. Go ahead and laugh...

Anyway, gonna go back out in a few hours and try and polish this off. Does it sound like I'm on the right track?

This V-twin takes a notoriusly long time to warm up before ya can blip the throttle..

True, and I knew that... ...I'm just getting impatient! I'm tired of messing with it and want to actually RIDE it!

I guess I should ride the motorcycle and see how it does when warm before changing things again. Wow...what a concept.

BUT...if it continues, the PMS out would be the proper next step, no?

thanks pop, it's the set I got of RK. I kinda like em'. Had to paint the hanging brackets, (they kinda stuck out). I like the look. b.t.w. dont let the look of a small muffler fool ya. After some serious thought .... dam that hurts too.... you can adjust your pms to rid a slight hesitation when you first crack the throttle and if your popping on hard decel but sounds like you are at cruising speed cracking the throttle when the hesitation and popping starts.Run the WOT as I mentioned it will tell you if you are lean and if it tells you you are not lean, then maybe you are right there and need to warm it more as Pop said.I guess what I am saying RK is run the WOT then if you are not lean to me it means if I change Jets I want to go lower.... dial my pms in till it stumbles then out till it quits 1/8th of a turn at a time.Take her out and run her again...and repeat if needed...Good luck .....Coug

It felt like I was on the edge of being lean with the DJ 170 when I did the WOT (close equivalent to a Mikuni 157.5...SMALL...), whereas before I did all the recent mods I had the DJ 175 (Mikuni 162.5) in there and it was good at WOT. So, I switched back to that, and with the addition of the ported manifold, I'm willing to bet I'm not lean on the main.

Supposed to be 66 tomorrow (never got past 45 today, and besides, I'm still on baby duty while the missus gets a day off and is out wine tasting), so I'll run 'er tomorrow and test it out. Then it's a can of Seafoam, run the piss out of it for a whole tank and then 3.72186945 qts. of Mobil 1 V-Twin and a new K&amp;N oil filter.

Oh, and unrelated to all this--I don't care what anyone says about needing one or not needing one, it's SO nice to now have a tach and just look up and dial in the idle AND know when I'm close to the rev limiter...
