Got my HSR 42! 2 Years, 3 Months ago
Well, I got my HSR 42 and I tore apart my baby to get the tps off the stock carb to modify and put on my HSR42, and realized that last time I had the carb off (about 3000 miles ago) I never plugged the tps in I couldn't believe it! The wire plug was just hanging there. The funny thing I went on a 362mile ride Sat. and was thinking man, my baby is runnin good...Do I really want to mess with it and put this HSR 42 on? Of course I have this disease that makes me believe I can ALWAYS make it a little better
Anyways, I also ripped out the fuel pump cause I won't need it with the HSR42 (I had relocated it to under the right side cover) and realized that part of the fuel line was almost completely collapsed and I pondered why it still ran Then I got into my stock carb looking at what seemed to be quite a bit of carbon / black crap inside the carb...at least more than I thought there should be...

Soooo question for those running the HSR42 now. What settings did you start with?

Do you attach a choke from the stock carb or is it chokeless?(didn't come with a choke)

What did you do with the carb heater and if not used did you cut the wires?

Are you running 2 throttle cables or just one?

Steven

Just getting ready to get into this too. Mine is a harley carb that uses harley cable ends. Will most likely put in a voes like Randy Fox describes in is article in the tech tips.

The harley model uses two cables.

From my reading Steven, Choke cables are an option (at purchase) on these carbs. They are typically not sold with one, but do have a choke circuit. Mine came with one, but it is too short. I plan on ordering one long enough to do the job.

You can get away with a one cable ran mine for two months that way now have both. You will need a choke cable for sure. Max air makes custom sized cable. I have the 01 main 167.5 pilot 22.5 needle #97 3 clip no spacer and float 18mm and yost tube. Hope that helps still recommend you do the TPS or voes. I also feel the pingel is well worth it but you might get away with it. I know one of the mods is running stock with a 45

You have to have a choke cable, no way around that. Highly recommend the TPS mod, I've had it every which way, even a big difference from a VOES mod to TPS mod. TPS mod is much better. VOES only acts as an on/off switch between CT and WOT curves, the ignition module see's a change to timing every .2mv with TPS

The 42 was made in mind for the HD's. Speedstar Mikuni only makes a few mods so to fit our Roadies. I've been running only the pull cable since I got mine with no issues, and put a chrome cap from ACE Hardware on the other cable hole. Skip the VOES, go right to the TPS mod.

This is the first time I have heard this Erbman. In fact I understood the factory (and aftermarket for sure) ignitions only have two timing curves. Can you help me understand what you learned about this?

That was my understanding as well..
I used Randy's article for the voes mod, and with the proper switch, it seems to work fine. I think it is just two different technologies that do basicly the same thing..

Can any HSR 42 be used, or do they differ based on what model of Harley they came off of? And, do you have to change anything with the intake (for mounting the carb)
