I have the same problem as the OP. However there's a lot here that is above my head. is there a good documentation about what all these numbers and such are so I can figure out how to solve my problems?

The best I can say is search and read, read, read. There is a lot of good info online. The tech articles here will explain a lot. (One of the tabs at the top of the page.)
This link gives some good info although it's not really OUR carb... http://www.4strokes.com/tech/howtojet.asp
On Curt's website (link above his sig pic) he has a link under "Projects" that has some carb tuning info.

It sound like you choke is not working at all. I would take it apart agian, make sure all the pieces are there and put it back together.

Thanks everyone,
I plan to pull a plug tonight to see if I'm running way to rich.
Probably pull the carb and check the float level also. I didn't
jet on the bike so I was pretty careful but ya never know. I may
drop the main to #170.
thanks,
everyone,
Chris

You said
Now I find If I open the choke at any position it's a no go. I have to give it a few twists of the throttle then manually hold it open
to keep it running. If I release the throttle it dies. After it's warm no problems.

By twisting the throttle while it's warming up you are taking the place of the choke ... in other words, you are supplying the extra fuel that the choke would normally supply.

It's not a 'running to rich' problem, otherwise you would stall the engine when you twist the throttle .... even more fuel.

When you took your choke apart you screwed something up ... that's the first place you should be looking to fix the startup problem, not changing out the main jet (although it probably is on the rich side),

Thats what I'm thinking, Any idea what to look for ? I have the service manual but didn't
see any kind of pic or view of the cable end that goes in the carb.
Thanks,
Chris

Page 6-7

Tough to say what to do .... just take it apart again and make sure all the parts are there and that it functions when you pull the choke knob.

Just a curiosity question when warmed up what is your idle like. Does it lobe or cam or is it a fast idle.

Seems to idle normal. Kinda hard for me to tell as I just got the bike.
I'm wondering if it had an existing problem. I just pulled the carb off again
and all the choke hardware is there and functions okay when pulling on it. I pulled
a plug and it is black with a white spot right at the electrode. I thought I spotted
raw fuel in the throat but i was shaking it around when I was pulling it off. Seems to
be pointing toward a possible hung up float as was suggested earlier. Is there a way to
adjust the float other than the way shown in the service manual ? ( clear tube etc. )
I have the carb off and would like to be able to do it when I pull the bowl.
Thanks all for your help.

Just found Ode's float adj. for off the bike from an old post.
I'll give that a try.
Thanks to all without this site I'd be lost.
The adventure continues.

Re:Bike will not start with choke 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Well I figured it out !!!

followed Odo's guide and float looked good
maybe even a little low. Had me stumped and then I started looking
at the Jet install instructions and the light came on.

Can you guess what I did ?

Wait for it..............

Wait for it ......................

Yea I installed the main jet in the starter jet position !!!!
What a dumbass !!
Now thats why we have directions huh . Can't see how it ran as good as it did, I imagine there was so much
fuel from the starter jet that it richened it enough to run well on the needle. I can hardly wait to see
how it runs now !!! Thanks to all for helping this dumbass. Of course no amount of good advice can correct
ineptitude, sheeezzz.
I will say this though, why is the factory jet large and the starter jet small and then the aftermarket (Dyno)makes
their main jets the same size as the starter one ? If they made them the same size as the factory main It would
have saved me a bunch of headaches. A clue to 1st time jet installers read the instruction in the box or in
the tech tab here. Don't go by the looks ! Doesn't make my mistake any less stupid but it does make me feel
better.

I'll let you know how it goes,
Thanks
Chris
