Bike runs with PMS closed all the way ? ! 2 Years, 7 Months ago
Should the bike continue to run with the PMS turned all the way in ?
I ended up adjusting the pms while the bike was running. Closed all the way
and it ran rough but continued to run, then turned it out until the bike
idle went up and ran smoother. I now have a big bog where the bike cuts out
when I snap open the throttle. Idles fine though.I'm currently running the needle on the 3rd
clip and a #170 main. I romped on it hard coming home and saw a bunch of smoke.
Should I raise that needle ? I'm at 6500ft.
Thanks,
The adventure continues,
Chris

How many turn out of the PMS are you? Where is you accelerator pump set? 170 main should be good for your elevation. You may have an air leak have you checked for that?

Haven't cranked it in to get a count. I adjusted just like I
do my holley carb on the car. Did orginally have it set at
2 1/2 out and it popped through the pipes something fierce and
it would cough through the carb. Now it feels sluggish and will
darn near die when I crack the throttle. It seems to do this
worse once it warms up. Dynojets initial setup recommends 4th clip
and #195 main which is the same as a 183 Mikuni,3 1/2 turns out
on the pms and a 137 pilot. Seems very rich to me. Checked the
boots on both sides of carb. Will check with wd40 or something
tomorrow to see if I have a leak.
thanks,
chris

Yep sure sounds like an air leak to me, make sure you carb is seated in the groves in the manifild and the clamp is tight but don't over tighten it. Check the manifold and pipes too.

Will do. Will pickup some wd40 and will re-examine the boots.
What is this smoke test I keep hearing about ?
Thanks

Some will use an incense stick or similar thing to see if the smoke gets sucked in anywhere around the carb, manifold, etc.

Most folks use the smoke test to check for leaks in the exhaust, but I guess it could also be used for intake..

Check for leaks like what has been mentioned. I use the Dyna Kit. Go back to the stock 35 primary. I would would also put in a 180 main jet if you have one. Definitely move the needle to the 3rd clip. Start your PMS at 2 turns out and tweak it from there. The Baron's jet kit is a favorite because it comes with the most usable sized main jet for the R*.

At your elevation I would try the DJ175 main, stock primary, needle on 3rd groove, and PMS 2 turns out. I'll keep track of this thread to see how it works out for you.

I never went to the 137 pilot as everyone here were using the stock ones. I had the 175 main originally
but went to the #170 when I took it apart this time. needle is allready at 3rd groove, wondering if I
should go to 2nd ? I was at 2 1/2 turn on pms. Float level looked good on measurement.
I'll count the turns as I back it in today.
Is the bike still supposed to run with the pms all the way in ?
It's in the teens this morning so I'll wait a bit to check it again.
Thanks again to everyone for the help,
Chris

Well just checked the bike again. Turned the pms in t0 2 turns
out. Still stumbling. So I took tank off set it to the side and
looked in the manifold and there is raw fuel in the boot exiting
the carb. So I started the bike and squirted carb cleaner near the clamp where
the carb mounts to the manifold boot. Thought I noticed a stumble
so I blasted it good and hard and the bike eventually died. Repeated the
spraying and replicated the results. Took the carb off remounted
tightened the clamp same thing. Pulled the carb and I see no tears
or holes. I'm going to check the float again since I have it off
and will put a band of electrical tape around the carb throat to see if
that will seal. What a pain in the A !
