I'm getting ready to install a K&N air cleaner assembly,
similiar to the star assembly and the bike has cobras.
What comes in the jet kits besides the main and pilot
jets. I know it has a needle but do you need to replace
it ? Does the factory one not have the grooves to raise or drop
it or is it a different type ? I found the spd-4wm09-49-10 on
ebay for about $40. Does it not have as many parts as the
Barons or Dynojet. Roadkill lives in my general area and he
runs a 175 main but says he could run the 170 and a 35 pilot( stock ? )
with the needle set at the 3rd groove. I plan on running the
same as we are both at about 6000 ft or so. Now he has a 1700
and I the 1600 not sure if that would make a difference.
Sorry guys I know this has been beat to death but need to know
what to order now that the aircleaner arrived. The Barons
and the Yamaha kits are only about $10 - $15 different in price. Also
could you just by the right main if the stock needle works or
is adjustable.
Thanks,
Chris

Stock needle only has one groove, the most you can do to it is use a shim (washer) to richen the mid to wot ckt to allow more gas to come in a bit sooner. When you add a more open air kit, you are allowing more air across all carb ckts. The portion of the needle that effects cruise is the straight diameter portion of the needle just below the grooves. After market needles have a smaller diameter of that part of the needle which allows more gas to pass through, and is what is needed with more air flow.
