Pilot Jet 3 Years, 7 Months ago
Please bear with me as this is a series of messages I have posted in attempt to find answers.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been looking at the pilot jets and have a question.
I noticed that the hole in the end of the size 40 pilot jet is smaller than the 37.5. (Barrel is smaller also)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would the holes in a 40 pilot jet be smaller than a 37.5 or a 35 for that matter....
I would have thought the larger the jet size the bigger the opening or holes in the jet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One thing I notice that I thought was strange. Some of these including the 40. seem to have a smaller throat size that the stock 35...
Might not make any difference as they fit into the carb. with no issue. But I thought that was strange.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 37.5 jet I have has the larger throat. I see it also has a ring in the head that the others do not have.

Post edited by: Sandbag, at: 2005/05/30 19:09

I have a #40 pilot at home. If I remember I'll measure it and post tonight.

I wonder why the barrel is larger on some of the pilot jets. It is like there is two different type of pilot jets make for the carb.?

Mikuni makes 2 jets of the same number size but entirely different jets. The difference is a ring around the thicker brassy end. If your pilot does not have a ring around it it is the wrong model and will be samller than the 35. Look for the ring...if not there go back to the highest you have with a ring until you get the right one...or else you're too lean.

The local stealer can not get the right jets. He had the smaller ones and tried to convince me they are the same.

If you have a way to do it, measure the inside diameter of the two pilot jets. On the 35, you will need to be able to measure the diameter that is inside the venturi (the bead). The two important factors for a pilot jet are length (how far it extends into the float bowl), and the diameter.

Mikuni jets can be confusing, because the numbers they assign correlate to flow rates rather than diameters.

I have seen #40s that did not have venturis in them, so that part is not too hard to get past. Just want to make sure that the diameter of the #40 is larger than the diameter of the venturi in the #35. If it is, and it is as long as the #35, you should be ok.
