i must be too rich??? 3 Years, 6 Months ago
my ride is as follows...
04 R*,10000mi, maxair filter(not using their jet kit),hard krome 3' long straights w/ baffles, speedstar jet kit..
i opened up the jet kit and used the needle but it came with an (in my opinion)unusable set of jets..(a #50 and #60 pilot and a #165 and #170 main)
i have had to go to the dealer and buy jets as follows(#40 and #45 pilot and #190 and #195 main)
the instructions from maxair say to use the #40 and the #195 with the needle on the 5th clip and use 2 washers under it..of course this is just a baseline
so>>>i have done the WOT and she wont accept anythin but the #195 and 2 washers under the needle or she pops loudly so thats what i have in...
and on the pilot i have tried the #45 but the pms wouldnt cause a stumble so i went to the #40 and have the stumble only if i close the pms off completly...
i have tried the #35 that came with the carb but no good ...i have her set at 2and 1/4 turns
now my question.. i read in the factory manual that the carb should have a#35 and a#170 (it came from yami with the #35 and a #182.5)??????
also noone on here seems to be going higher than the #170 and i have to have a #195 ...am i all wrong and too rich on the main??? my pipes are all black and plugs are white as snow on the front cyl. and black on the rear..she stumbles at very low throttle as per my other post(Re:loping at slow cruise by warthog)any info would ve greatly appreciated... and sorry for the long posts, i just want to be thouough and consise.. thank you, warthog

Warthog. This can be very confusing as you sound like you're using jets from different manufacturers. If you visit techtips here on the clinic you will find a cross reference document that will allow you to cross different manufacturers and sizes. Once you get that figured out you will be better able to dial it in. I'm not at all familiar with the speedstar sizing. I'd hope it would be mikuni as the stock jets are but not sure. Maybe Gram or someone else will chime in. I can only give you what has been successful for me. I've got an 04 with stock intake manifold (not ported). Running shogun slashers and arlen ness air. I'm running a dynojet needle on 4th slot (from what I've read, not much difference on the different manufacturers needles), a mikuni 175 and 37.5 dynojet pilot. Running Maxmix PMS screw about 1 turn out. Great performance and mid 40s on mpg. Many of the posts you see running the smaller jets are referring to the 1602 cc roadstar. The stock jets are bigger on 04+ models. Hope this helps.

thank you coast for the reply i am beginning to think i am having a problem with electrical somehow...
am going to solder up the starter jet and concentrate on the coils and juicebox...
like I have said before she does a wonderful job in all ranges but at the VERY FIRST of the throttle..
and my plugs are only black on the rear not the front leading me to belive i have a firing or valve problem...
also i have looked long and hard at the jets and am betting that the speedstar jets are indeed mikuni...
again thank you for your input as all and any is welcome and will be most appreciated..

I read your comments in the other post.

Jetting can be frustrating so you need to do one thing at a time.

You have a 1700 which is jetted differently than the 1602, they are usually set up with larger stock jets so be careful re the info you read.

As a rule of thumb ..... if you put on pipes, you don't need to rejet and usually a tweak of the PMS will do the trick.

If you add a free-flowing air-box, then you need to enrichen your circuit. A good starting point is to go up a size or two on the same brand main jet and use an aftermarket adjustable needle around the 4th clip.

Don't give up yet If I can do it so can you (I destroy carbs )

We are in same ball park. I now have a 37.5 pilot and a 180 main. 4th clip...
I also have the 1700. It is close but still not exact. I have the same problem you mention......Right off idle...Cruse position in throttle.

O....K...
got my bitch all torn down and gonna make some changes
am going to relocate my pump under the tank for reasons of cooling and cosmetics...
gonna wrap my coils for obvious reasons...
gonna install a dynojet kit because of my mixmatched jetting situation...
and have already ported the front cyl of my manifold....
my thinking is that if the rear runs rich and the front lean...
then i should try and get fuel flowing into the front easier...
i am posting all this to get opinions...
i know sandbag has the dynojet kit with no joy but i have been using the speedstar kit and buying single jets and gettin some with "the ring" and others without... so my thinking is that a dynojet would be at least a solid starting point... who knows...
and maybe its ludicrus to port only one side of the stock manifold but i need the lean running front cyl to get more fuel than the rear so it is my "shot in the dark" so to speak...
well lemme have it gents and ill read again before i finish and see what the concensus is..lol
maybe i an onto a good thing
and maybe i am just on sonething....
anyway, the sunball beckons me to ride not work, damnit
so ill go and cyas all later on and stuff....

"have already ported the front cyl of my manifold....'

I read that line 3 times just to make sure I didn't read it wrong and then read your 'theory'.

I haven't heard of anyone doing this before so I'm interested to see what your results are.

If it works then you can patent the idea ..... the warthog manifold mod

I know that I have sometimes 'gone boldy where no man has gone before' so ....

Good luck

Yes Doc,
It does sound a lot crazy on the porting issue...
but i read on the forum somewhere that these engines historicaly run rich on the #1 and lean on the #2 due to design and layout...
i have considered the jetting issues and cannot figure out why if indeed the jetting is wrong that BOTH cylinders dont run lean or rich unifommly...
I would have not even considered porting my manifold untill i read how easy it is and that it would enrichen the mix quite a bit.
so at any rate if i am not satisified i can always port the other side and voila...
i knew some of you guys would like that one...lol
and the boldly go where no man has gone before ...
leaves me teary-eyed and sullen... have always wanted to do a first
will keep yous posted and all

"cannot figure out why if indeed the jetting is wrong that BOTH cylinders dont run lean or rich unifommly."

I think I read somewhere that it is due to the back cylinder running hotter than the front .... but don't ask me to explain.
