got the carb apart 1 Year, 8 Months ago
Got the carb apart for the first time. 182.5 main, 55 pilot, stock I guess. All I did was put the cobra's on it and I'm getting a little spark knock. Drilled the PMS plug out. It was only out 1/2 turn total. Didnt seem like much since I've seen other guys in here saying theirs are 2 1/2 turns out or so. Or does it matter, are they all that much different? Anyway I only turned it out 1/4 turn, like I was told. Didnt seem to help much, still has a little spark knock on takeoff "sometimes'. And a little cough on occasion. Should I back it out more and see what happens? I'm new at rippin' these carbs apart, so bear with me. thanks guys

Stock main is 182.5 but stock pilot is 35. I suspect someone has been in there. Were the screws that hold the float bowl 'original'?

All I did was put the cobra's on it and I'm getting a little spark knock.

What are you hearing and when do you hear it?

You're at 1/2 'cause your pilot is so big. A cough is usually caused by being too lean. On stock PMS screw you want to be about 2.0 - 4.0. PMS is initially adjusted by turning it in until it starts to stumbles then counting the number of turns, turning it out until it stumbles. Halfway between these two points is were to set it.

Can you start the bike without the choke when the bike is cold?

Doc..the screws were the soft stock screws, didnt have a scratch on them and they were a pain to get out. I hear a minor "spark knocking sound" just for an instant when I leave from a dead stop, but not always. Seems more when the engine is hotter when I'm in town .."light to light". never did it till' I put the cobra's on.The cough is the typical" blip" cough, although it's not as bad since I put the pipes on for some reason. And lastly, NO way will it start without the choke, seem's very cold hearted. not unlike the Harleys I'm used to. I have to warm it about 3 or 4 min. at half choke then run it down the road about 2 miles before I can push it in all the way. I'm wondering if I read the numbers right... maybe it was 35 and not 55. Wife says I'm due for glasses.

If you had the stock soft screws and "they were a pain to get out" then yes .... get glasses and join the rest of us

Do the PMS adjustment as I outlined previously.

Also check for a manifold leak (manifold to head, manifold to carb body), especially the AIS nipple on the manifold.

Choke info sounds typical. I usually don't let it 'warm up'. I just ride it easy with the choke until it not needed.

I take my glasses off to read 'fine print'. What I fid more critical is lighting. It's more difficult to read things if the lighting is low.
